TOM's Film Club: La Strada (PG) on Monday 18th June 2018
To celebrate 250 years of circus, TOM’s Film Club presents a Big Top themed double bill, concluding with a masterpiece of 20th century cinema.
Winner of the first competitive Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and referred to by Roger Ebert as the first of Fellini’s films that can be entirely called Felliniesque, La Stradahas since garnered a reputation as not only one of the finest films in the director’s canon, but as a masterpiece in 20th century filmmaking.
The film stars Fellini’s wife Giulietta Masina as the waif-like Gelsomina, who is sold by her impoverished mother into a life of drudgery to a brutish fairground wrestler named Zampano. However, when a relationship starts to bloom with a gentle-natured tightrope walker known as The Fool, a dramatic turn of events lead to a powerful conclusion. Coupled with a whimsically poetic score by Fellini regular Nino Rota (The Godfather Parts I & II) and shot in beautifully bleak Black & White by Otello Martelli, La Strada is presented here as part of a brand new restoration.
“I think it’s the one you have to see if you don’t see any of his pictures”
