New Forest Autumn Foraging Course on Friday 19th October 2018
There are not many better places around to learn about the wonderful wild foods that are available in the UK.
Our venue for meeting and discussing our finds will be the Red Shoot Inn, a lovely pub in the west of the forest. The course starts there with a 20 minute introduction on how to forage safely and sustainably, and a brief of the general countryside codes where they relate to foragers.
Then we’ll set off for a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the area identifying the different edible and poisonous plants, fruits and mushrooms that we come across. We’ll finish the day off with a light wild food lunch based on what we have found.
The Forestry Commission recently launched a new campaign to highlight the importance of the New Forest fungi and to appeal to people to support a “no-picking” code on the Site of Special scientific interest (SSSI). They have given us permission to lead educational events only, so as a group we will not be picking anything to take home although we do have permission to pick for the meal. Please observe their voluntary ban on picking mushrooms at all other times that you are in the forest.
