Review of A Winged Victory for the Sullen
A Winged Victory for the Sullen were simply stunning and amazing in the atmospheric St Paul’s Church in Birmingham’s Jewellry Quarter, Birmingham. This is a gig that I hope will never leave me.

Review of A Winged Victory for the Sullen
The musicians and arrangements were amazing, great acoustics in the Church and the lightshow really added another sensory layer. The main issue is that most seats to the right and left of the stage on the balcony, only allow a view of about 1/3 of the stage even standing up. I had to move to stand directly at the back to get a good view of the strings and stage setup. Need to get there early to grab the best seats. Nice beer too

Review of A Winged Victory for the Sullen
It was something of a shock to see that the presentation of this type of music hasn’t changed since the 1970s! Dry ice and ill considered lighting, more suited to a much bigger venue, made this less than comfortable to enjoy. It was a bit of a throwback for me and not in a particularly interesting way.
I left early as the lights were piercing and I wondered what the group would sound like without the overloaded presentation.
In addition, I also noticed that this was an exclusively white audience. Even Symphony Hall is more diverse! This didn’t look like the Birmingham in the 21st century that I know and proudly live in.

Review of A Winged Victory for the Sullen
A wonderful performance in a great venue. As the music was very ambient I found it off putting that there was a bar selling canned beer, so during the performance there was a constant sound of cans being opened.
