New Birmingham live music brand, Thicker Than Honey, presents its first show with Brighton-based neo soul band Yakul, and Birmingham's jazz fusion group Odd Soul, at Hare & Hounds on Thursday 1st October. It's rare to find two UK bands that are musically as well suited as these two, both taking influence from the worlds of jazz, soul & hip hop to form melodically catchy and musically epic tunes. Catch them playing on the same bill for the first time at the Hare & Hounds this October, tickets are on sale now.

Yakul

Yakul are a four-piece neo soul band from Brighton, UK, influenced by the likes of J-Dilla, D’Angelo and Hiatus Kaiyote, with a growing reputation within the rapidly growing new soul and jazz movement coming out of the UK at the moment.

Yakul released their critically-acclaimed debut EP ‘Getting Late’ in August 2019, picking up key radio support from tastemakers Gilles Peterson (6Music), Jamz Supernova (1Xtra) and KCRW (LA), alongside Spotify and Deezer official playlist support including Jazz UK and Soultronic. They released a new single ‘Holidays’ in November 2019. 'Blossoming' off the EP has been nominated as the Track of the Year at the prestigious Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2020, winners to be announced in late January.

The band consists of James Berkeley (vocals and keys), Tom Caldwell Nichols (bass), Sam Hughes (drums) and Leo Utton (guitar), all session level players who have created an excellent live show. Yakul performed multiple times at Ronnie Scotts in 2019, alongside some key festival performances including Love Supreme and On Blackheath, and supports including Mildlife and Joel Culpepper.

2020 brings Yakul’s second EP release, due in the summer, starting with their next single, due February 2020, and many more live shows.

Odd Soul

Forged in Birmingham’s bubbling Selly Oak music scene, Odd Soul blend jazz, soul, post-rock and hip-hop to create a fresh, vibrant and intricate sound. Odd Soul take jazz and soul influences from the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote and Jordan Rakei, and fuse them with the stratospheric post-rock stylings of Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, creating dramatic soundscapes punctuated with catchy melodies and the occasional musical firework.

The band are fronted by the dual vocals of Gabriella Liandu (voice) and Rohit Jepegnanam (voice, guitar), alongside the 'impressive collective talents' (Ian Paget, Indie Midlands) of James Dickinson (keyboards, backing vocals), Olli Smith (drums), Seb Read (bass) and Simon Meikle (guitar).

Described by Counteract as “one of Birmingham’s most talented young acts', Odd Soul have been entertaining audiences in their hometown and beyond since forming in 2017, including the sold-out launch of their debut EP Movies in Birmingham’s Sunflower Lounge, a headline show at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and performing at Birmingham’s premier Neo Soul jam night, Neighbourhd. 'Odd Soul being in town is as good a reason as any to get your a*** out of the house and into whatever venue they’re packing out this time.”
