Mike & Solveig, Jim McAteer plus Katherine Priddy on Tuesday 24th July 2018

MIKE & SOLVEIG (Scotland/Norway)

Mike & Solveig's music can be characterised as experimental folk. Mike Hastings sings and plays guitar, banjo and strumstick, and Solveig Askvik sings and plays the fiddle and glockenspiel. They play original songs and instrumentals reminiscent of The Incredible String Band, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Moondog, Syd Barrett, Bert Jansch, Ivor Cutler etc. They are both experienced musicians that have been part of the Glasgow music scene for the last 17 years or so.

Mike is a full-time musician playing in a few different bands. His main band is the psychedelic rock band The Trembling Bells. He also plays in the band of Mike Heron (The incredible String Band). Solveig was previously also part of Heron's band, but left when she moved back to Bergen in Norway. Throughout his career, Mike has played with many well known musicians. Some of these are the American psych-folk singer Scott Fagan, Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) and Peter Daltrey from Kaleidoscope (UK).

'Mike & Solveig['s] 2015 album 'Here Comes Today' is an understated joy'

Jon Dale, Uncut, March 2018

'[Mike & Solveig] have been key players in the Glasgow psych-folk scene for the past decade or so. [...] Mike’s intricate fingerpicked guitar interweaves with Solveig’s sliding fiddle lines in finely-crafted tales recalling the best of the Scottish folk tradition.'
Celtic Music Radio, Glasgow

Jim McAteer (Scotland)

Jim McAteer is a guitarist and singer from the musical city of Glasgow in Scotland. Previous gigs include support slots for – Martin Carthy, Wiz Jones, Davey Graham, Robin Williamson, Mike Heron and John Renbourn, as well as appearing in his own right at international venues from New York to Kazakhstan! He runs a number of weekly open mics in Glasgow and promotes and comperes many live gigs - showcasing local unsigned musical talent as well as international touring acts.

Always ready for a musical adventure, he spent a recent summer busking on the Paris Metro subway system. Before that, he drove a faithful hatchback, overland from Glasgow to Kazakhstan and the border of China! Passing diagonally across Europe and on through Turkey and Iran, following the ancient silk road....recording buskers and musicians and playing himself, as he passed through....from West to East!
