Viridian Ensemble - Workshop: Experiments with Sound & Image
Join us for a participatory workshop in improvisation and visual music.
Facilitated by Viridian Ensemble members Tina Hitchens (Harpoon, Tisla) & Laura Phillips (filmmaker and artist) this workshop offers a chance to explore musical improvisation and respond to/ work with visual imagery. We aim to discuss inspirational artists, composers, musicians and thinkers in the field and acknowledge a historical lineage of the genre. Open to all ages and abilities, (no prior musical experience required) instrumentation will be provided but you're also welcome to bring an acoustic instrument to play or just turn up.
Bio:
Viridian Ensemble are an ethereal blend of image and noise, reimagining folklore and femininity. Improvised sound and image (digital and analogue) produce textural dialogue.
Viridian Ensemble are: Dali de Saint Paul (Vocal), Tina Hitchens (flute), Caitlin Alais Callahan (double bass), Esme Betamax (percussion) and Laura Phillips (16mm films, sound responsive projections, waterphone).
Inspired by Expanded Film, and the free improvisation vanguard: Les Diaboliques/Feminist Improv Group. Performances evoke dissociative states, keening, and supernaturalism. Utterances and nonsensical languages entwine collective rhythm, tone, and resonance.
