Cathedral Tram Stop Sheffield S1 1HA venue information

Between 1270 and 1648 Sheffield was a small market town dominated by a great stone castle, which was later dismantled by the Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. Thanks to the growth of the steel industry and a rapidly increasing population Sheffield was granted city status in 1893. At the heart of the modern city, close to the River Don, lies a grid of medieval streets still bearing their original names.

Join your 7 Hills Social friends for this walk around the centre of Sheffield, and discover some surprising facts from the city's past. We start at the Sheffield Cathedral, before walking along Campo Lane, and on to Fitzalan Square, before heading to the Old Queens Head Pub, Ponds Forge and Victoria Quays. The River Don has many historic locations, including Lady's Bridge and Kelham Island. Heading away from the River Don takes us to Paradise Square, and the Old Bank House. The Old Bank House is the oldest original brink building in Sheffield, dating from the 1720's.

This circular walk is approximately 2 miles (3.5km) long, and involves some uphill and downhill sections. Most of the walk is along pavements, however, please wear suitable footwear, that can cope with wet and slippery conditions. We shall also be walking along, and crossing, busy roads, so please take extra care here, and remember the “Green Cross Code”. As the weather can change, please also bring along waterproof clothing. Toilets are available in the Sheffield Transport Interchange. Cost 20p.
