Wu Tang Clan co-founder and affiliate Oliver “Power” Grant dies, aged 52

The entrepreneur and clothing mogul’s passing was confirmed by the hip hop collective yesterday.

Oliver “Power” Grant, a co-founder and close affiliate of legendary hip-hop collective Wu Tang Clan, has died aged 52. The collective confirmed his passing on social media yesterday, writing, “Rest in Power, Power.”

Born in Jamaica in 1973 and raised in Staten Island’s Park Hill Projects, Grant grew up alongside Wu Tang Clan and was both an early investor and an executive producer on the group’s projects. launched the Wu Wear clothing line in 1995 following the Clan’s legendary debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) going platinum. His nickname “Power” was coined over a game of chess with two Clan members, owing to the amount of force it takes to do work. 

Grant’s friends and affiliates have paid tribute to the clothing mogul in the cake of his passing. “We couldn’t have done it without him,” Clan member GZA wrote on Instagram, “Wu wouldn’t have come to fruition without Power. His passing is a profound loss to us all.” Method Man wrote, “Paradise my Brother safe Travels!!” while Raekwon paid tribute with, “POWER we been everywhere… now you everywhere!”
