The clock is ticking, the door-to-door carol singers are defrosting, and Christmas is right around the corner, which means Santa is almost here! Amidst the excitement and chaos of putting up the decorations, finding presents and making sure you’re on the nice list, it’s important to soak up the festive spirit. And what better way to do that than with a visit to see Santa at one of his Grottos?

Santa’s Grottos are always a highlight for kids and even the whole family, as every year features numerous pop-up paradises where Santa and his elves reside, eager to uncover what the little ones want for Christmas. If you’re lucky enough to be in or around the lovely city of York, you’re in the right place, as we’ve compiled the best places to see Santa this Christmas. Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland

When: Friday 14th November 2025 - Sunday 4th January 2026

Where: York Designer Outlet in York 

Kicking things off with a favourite, we have Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland. An awe-inspiring experience for all ages, this wintery paradise revamps York Designer Outlet with a glistening outdoor ice rink, funfair, grotto and The Chalet, its cosy designer cafe. En route to Santa’s magical grotto is an extended snowy woodland walk and glittering light tunnel winding up to the main man’s cabin, where a warm welcome and special gifts await. 

If Santa’s Grotto wasn’t enough, Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland boasts the North of England’s largest outdoor skate rink, topped with a newly landscaped woodland scene as its backdrop. So get those skates on and embark on the wintery passage for a visit to Santa you won’t forget. 

 


 

Father Christmas at Castle Howard

Where: Castle Howard in York

Over at Castle Howard, you can meet the full gang this Christmas. Father Christmas, Mrs Claus, and WonderPhil are waiting to put on a show bursting with festive cheer, classic Christmas songs, and jostling jingle bells. However, this year, the House has been transformed into the magical world of Oz, for a festive take on L. Frank Baum’s much-loved story, told through installations, soundscapes and projections.

Elsewhere on the castle grounds, you can find Santa’s Grotto in the Boathouse, where t warm and wonderful Story Craft Theatre returns with a new festive show; Santa Paws, where your dogs can meet Santa Paws in the Garden Centre, snap a festive photo, and grab a treat; all alongside the afroemetioned Grotto in the Castle, where Each child with a ticket receives a special gift to take home. What’s not to love? 

 


 

North Yorkshire Moors Railway Santa Express

Where: North Yorkshire Moors Railway in York

Make sure you don’t miss this next stop, as the wondrous North Yorkshire Moors Railway this Christmas is one of the best places to see Santa. Starting off at the stunning Pickering Station, adorned in festive decorations, indulge in the bright lights, Christmas trees and carols filling the air. After that, you can meet the main man on board a merry steam train and receive a traditional railway ticket to commemorate your journey. Alongside the mementos to cherish, there are charming Christmas tea rooms and gift shops for kids and families alike to enjoy.

For a twist on the traditional grotto, hop aboard the River Ouse for a magical Santa cruise. The little ones can meet Santa and receive gifts, while parents soak in the view of York sparkling with festive lights. A short drive from York, but worth the travel, Mother Shipton’s Cave, one of the oldest tourist attractions in England, also boasts one of the cosiest worlds of magic and merriment this Christmas, including an enchanting Santa’s Grotto. 

Alongside meeting Santa and receiving a special toy, you can pose for a photo in his sleigh; gather around Holly Berry, the enchanting storyteller, as she weaves tales of wonder and merriment; collect your own bag of reindeer food, amagical blend that you’ll sprinkle outside on Christmas Eve to guide Santa’s reindeer to your home; hang you wishes on the Christmas tree; and delve into the atmospheric caves, including the legendary Petrifying Well, in the depths of the woodlands

 


  

York’s Chocolate Story – Festive Fun for Sweet Tooths

Chocolate lovers, rejoice! This Christmas, you can join the elves on a magical festive guided tour taking you through the secrets of chocolate-making, with plenty of delicious samples along the way. And the best part? Santa himself joins you partway through the tour to share the magic with you!

Everyone will create a Christmas-themed chocolate lolly to take home, and each child can enjoy a meet and greet with Santa, share their Christmas wishes with him, and receive a special festive gift. Here, the adults don't leave empty-handed either; alongside a delicious hot chocolate throughout, Santa will also be giving special sweet grown-up gifts. The sweetest day out for the family this Christmas!

 


 

Piglets Adventure Farm – Santa’s Woodland Village

All aboard Elf Airlines at Piglets Adventure Farm as you embark on an enchanted journey on Santa’s magical sleigh through snowy trees and twinkling lights to arrive at Santa’s Woodland Village, where a magical world awaits!

Children can meet Santa in his magical grotto, post letters at the Polar Post Office, and explore the Elf Academy Show. Whilst also perusing Mrs Claus’s Sweet Shop, make some food for the Reindeer, and just exploring the Woodland Village, where you can say hello to the festive furry friends and hang your Christmas Wish on the Wishing Tree for Santa.
