Stormzy's film company greenlit to co-produce Ian Wright biopic

#Merky Films will be the official co-producer, as well as Stormzy leading as executive producer.

A collab that you wouldn't see coming but makes perfect sense in the official development of Stormzy's film company #Merky Films, co-producing a biopic of Arsenal FC legend, Ian Wright. 

Set to follow Wright throughout his early years, the biopic is going to be far more than just a football story. Exploring the emotional and deeply personal journey behind one of England’s most beloved sporting figures, including Wright's years growing up on Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, his turbulent childhood shaped by trauma and instability, and the life-changing influence of supportive figures around him. 

Against a backdrop of 1970s and 80s South London, the story will highlight the rejection and hardship of a young Black British boy born to first-generation Caribbean immigrants as he attempts to carve out a future far beyond the limits placed on him. As well as personal self-rage that permeated his life, before receiving his ‘last shot’ to become a professional footballer.  

Sharing his thoughts on the project, Wright said, "Telling my story in full for the first time feels surreal and, in some ways, a long time coming. There are parts of my life that will be familiar because they’ve been talked about over the years, but this film is the first time we’re bringing it all together. My story is one that truly shows how the company you keep can break you down and build you up. There are hard-hitting moments, but in the end, I want it to give people hope and joy." 

Launched only last year, this will mark a huge project for Stormzy's film company (#Merky Films), where he and Akua Agyemfra will also be co-producers. Other members of the production team include Academy Award-nominated producer Sara McFarlane and Stephen Tottingham. 

Official release dates for the film are yet to be announced,  but more information will be revealed in the coming months.
