Spotify to introduce AI labels for AI-generated artists

The streaming giant will roll out new measures to improve transparency for music fans while helping tackle the rise of AI-created music.

Digital music streaming giant Spotify is introducing a new labelling system designed to help listeners identify AI-generated artists and content on its platform.

From mid-September, profiles identified as AI-generated will display an "AI Persona" badge across artist pages, search results and playlist track listings, making it easier for users to distinguish between human artists and AI-created personas.

The streaming platform has also confirmed that music from AI Personas will no longer appear in Spotify's editorial playlists or algorithmic recommendations, unless a listener already follows that profile.

From today (Wednesday 12th August), artists can self-identify as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists. Spotify says it will also carry out its own reviews to identify accounts that have not disclosed their AI status, and later this year, listeners will be able to report artist profiles they believe have been created using AI, with submissions reviewed by the platform’s moderation team.

The changes are focused on identifying AI-generated artist personas rather than revealing how individual songs were made. Human musicians who use AI as part of their creative process will not automatically receive an AI Persona label.

The announcement comes as AI-generated music continues to grow across streaming services. Last month, Deezer revealed that AI-made tracks now account for more than half of all daily uploads to its platform, while Spotify has continued its own efforts to tackle AI spam and improve transparency for listeners.

Spotify joins a growing number of music platforms introducing measures to address the rapid rise of AI-generated content. Apple Music, Deezer, TIDAL, Bandcamp and SoundCloud have all announced new policies or tools aimed at helping listeners better understand how AI is being used across their services.
