Skiddle's open goal: A weekly roundup of football news and events

We take a look at all the action so far from this international break period.

Date published: 26th Sep 2022

It was the international break in the latest football game week, which meant that a lot of players were out playing for their national teams in the Nations League. England were relegated from their Nations League group after a defeat to Italy in a game that wasn't an entertaining watch.

It raised questions yet again about Gareth Southgate as England are in a poor run of form at the moment. The team selection saw him stick with regular favourites rather than those players in form. It is astounding that Harry Maguire is picked over the incredibly talented Ben White, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi.

England are now set to play Germany tonight in a game which now means nothing to them. Scotland were the most impressive of the home nations picking up a 3-0 win over Ukraine who they will be facing again on the 27th. They also managed a 2-1 over rivals Northern Ireland.

They need to win again to top their group. Virgil Van Dijk was in top form for the Netherlands as they beat Belgium 1-0 thanks to his header which meant that they topped their group. In terms of shocks, France were beaten 2-0 by Denmark, Turkey lost 2-1 to the Faroe Islands and an impressive Hungary beat Germany 1-0.

It gives us a good idea of where sides are at ahead of this year's World Cup in Qatar, with some of the favourites heading to the tournament in shaky form. We can't lie though, we can't wait until the major leagues return as there's a lot of the season to play. If you're looking for a football fix take a look at the events below.
