Skiddle's Open Goal: A Weekly Roundup of Football news and events

We take a look at the latest football news.

Date published: 22nd Mar 2022

It was a weekend of both Premier League and FA Cup action as we head towards the final chapter of the season. We found out who the semi-finalists for the FA Cup will be as Middlesborough took on the troubled Chelsea. Yet the away side have not let the off-field drama get to them and they easily came away with a 2-0 win.

In the first of the Sunday fixtures, Crystal Palace gained an easy 4-0 win over relegation-threatened Everton who after a strong start were then completely outmatched for the rest of the game. Crystal Palace now seem to have their most exciting team of the Premier League era.

Manchester City didn't play at their best when they went to Southampton, conceding a last-minute equaliser at half-time. Yet they came out of the blocks in the second to blow Southampton away and eventually won 4-1. The final game saw Liverpool travel to Nottingham Forest.

The home fans were right behind the Championship side who played really well all game, making it really difficult for Liverpool. In a game that could have gone either way, Diogo Jota was just onside as he tapped in to score the only goal of the game. That means that Liverpool will face Manchester City in the next round while Chelsea face Crystal Palace. The next round is going to be incredibly entertaining.

In Premier League news the most exciting encounter was the Wolves vs Leeds game. The home side gained a 2-0 advantage on what looked like it was going to be an easy night for them. Then Raul Jiminez was sent off controversially in what looked like a 50-50 with Leeds keeper Mesllier. Leeds rallied, with Luke Ayling scoring a dramatic 91st-minute winner in what was a huge result in the relegation fight.
