Jimmy Cliff, one of reggae’s most powerful artists, has died, aged 81.

Cliff’s wife, Latifa Chambers, shared the news with fans on Cliff’s Instagram account. In the post, she said: “It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia.

“I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career. He really appreciated each and every fan for their love… Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.”

The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

The Jamaican musician was a vital figure in reggae, helping to bring the sound global. The film is a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Once even bigger than fellow reggae legend Bob Marley, Cliff’s career spanned six decades and produced iconic songs like 'Many Rivers to Cross', ‘Wonderful World’, 'You Can Get It If You Really Want', and 'The Harder They Come'.

Also an actor, Cliff's lead role as a rebel in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come is attributed to the film that brought reggae to the US.

Jamaica’s prime minister, Andrew Holness, is one of many who paid tribute to the late legend, posting: “Today, Jamaica pauses to honour the life of the Honourable Jimmy Cliff, OM, a true cultural giant whose music carried the heart of our nation to the world... Cliff told our story with honesty and soul.

“His music lifted people through hard times, inspired generations, and helped to shape the global respect that Jamaican culture enjoys today.

“We give thanks for his life, his contribution, and the pride he brought to Jamaica.”
