A new programme exploring pirate radio stations has kicked off at London’s Barbican.

From Sunday 1st to Monday 30th June, Rebel Radio allows attendees to "experience the sound of resistance and reinvention" at its month-long celebration of pirate radio and its impact on music in a series of events.

On the Barbican website, the description of the programme reads, “Pirate radio was a movement. A rebellious force that gave Black British music and underground sounds a platform when mainstream stations wouldn’t. It shaped UK culture then, and its influence continues today.

“Discover the radical influence of pirate radio across June through our programme of live radio broadcasts, a Rinse FM party, Sunday Selecta listening sessions, talks, workshops, film screenings, a 6-part podcast series and more.”

Youth-led London-based station Reprezent Radio will take over the venue for four days, featuring pirate radio stories, exclusive sets, and special guests including Ragga Twins & Jamie Rodigan, Shabba D, Norman J, DJ Spoony, and more. All Reprezent Radio events will be free to attend.

A programme of talks curated by Tobi Kyeremateng from Them Ones Presents will also take place, featuring panellists Richie Brave, Laura ‘Hyperfrank’ Brosnan, Aniefiok Ekpoudom, Elijah, Geeneus, and more.

Legendary radio station Rinse FM will host a one-off party featuring pirate radio originals playing B2B with the new-gen of artists. DJs and MCs will be announced soon.

They will screen films on pirate radio stations, including Breaking the Silence: Pirate Radio, Black Media, and Voices of Resistance. There will also be a six-part podcast and workshops.
