Steins at the ready! A brand new German beer festival has been added to Manchester summer calendar.

German Bierfest takes over Albert Square from June 1-5 and has been put together by the people behind visiting beer festival Oktoberfest.

Albert Square will be transformed into a German village packed with wooden huts selling everything from German sausages to souvenirs, and there?s a beer garden and Fest Tent bar with space for 1,200 people.

There?ll also be a dedicated Sekt Garden where visitors can taste the famous Sekt - a German sparkling wine. A range of Bavarian Weissbier, Festbier and Craftbier will be available, all from the Bavarian Festbeer Brewery, and there?ll be one special beer designed and brewed for the festival.

The inaugural event is based on the concept of the sommerfest, or summer festival - a popular pop up event in many German towns and cities.

Rather than replicate the grown up atmosphere of Oktoberfest, though, director Carsten Raun says he wants the festival to be for all the family, and so the square includes a Fun Time Area with a pop up funfair, classic games including Hau den Lukas, bull-riding and a shooting hut.

He said: ?Manchester German Bierfest promotes authentic German cultural experiences. We want to bring a new attraction to Manchester and we expect up to 20,000 people. And guests of all ages are welcome.?

But he assures beer enthusiasts that the festival will also have something very special for the grown ups. ?With respect to longstanding traditions, brewing expertise and excellent flavour, the brew master has come up with the perfect brew for German Bierfest.

?In addition, there?s a selection of savory German delicacies such as Schnitzel, Brezel, Hendl.

?Guests are promised to have amazing experiences about German culture at the centre of Manchester.?

Entry to the festival is free (no ticket required), but tickets for the Bavaraian Beer Tent can now be purchased to guarantee entry, priced from £10.

Tickets from £20-£30 offer guaranteed reserved seat in the Bavarian Bier Tent with one stein (two pints) of beer, two mini Pork Knuckles, and an Underberg (digestif). VIP and group packages are also available.

All tickets can be purchased now via manchester.bierfest.co.uk .
