I used to think Hed Kandi were the label that everybody loved to hate. The brand is clean, crisp, does exactly what it says on the tin and from what I know, they host a damn good party. Yet in some circles that upsets the 'clubbers' and the Hed Kandi just aint as tasty.

Over the last few months i've had chance to listen to a number of the compilations, and although not my cup of tea entirely, it certainly doesn't upset the system. The records are a well picked selection from weeks gone by, packaged nicely into the infamous box and artwork. Which again is slightly annoying because it doesn't fit nicely into a cd rack, but once you have a few next to each other on a shelf it easily works!

On the 5th September Hed Kandi presented ‘The Mix 50,’ a pivotal release in Kandi history with 3 CDs dripping with the label’s distinctive sound, from the classic to the upfront – all grown up and sexier than ever. That's 50 compilations released since 1999, a feat which even REM haven't even managed yet (though I am by no means comparing the two)

The dazzling Disco Heaven girls guide us through CD1, kicking off with the effervescent sunshine of Ministers De La Funk’s ‘Believe’ featuring Jocelyn Brown, next up the girls slink straight towards the soothing disco funk of ‘To Be In Love’ by Masters At Work featuring India before ending the night with Soulsearchers’ ‘Can’t Get Enough.’

Twisted Disco ushers us into Kandi’s darker confines, kicking off with the filtered electro of Mylo’s summer smash ‘Drop The Pressure’ and the urgent synth taps of Rui Da Silva’s ‘Touch Me’ before Timo Maas plunges us into the dense ebb of ‘To Get Down.’

The final offering takes a journey Back To Love, Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge’s ‘It’s Alright’ delivers a dose of early acid house before Clivilles & Cole drop their soulful classic ‘A Deeper Love.’ The tough stylings of Adamski’s ‘Killer’ round off the retrospective.

Admittedly, the above three paragraphs are taken straight off the accompanying press release, but they basically tell it as it is. Put it this way, if you like Hed Kandi, you will love this cd, it has everything and more that you require from a pre bar warmup to an end of night wind down. It's by no means groundbreaking, earth shattering and in some points you can quite obviously tell that a computer has put it together - yet how many compilations out there are actually properly 'mixed' anyway?

"With the release of ‘The Mix 50,’ Hed Kandi celebrates this milestone with quite simply a collection of the very finest Hed Kandi tracks ever,” says label boss Horace McDonald. “It’s all on one package, with nothing missing. This is the definitive album of Hed Kandi and it's as good as it gets."

Catering to a generation of grown up clubbers and music lovers, Hed Kandi has become widely recognized for its series of eclectic compilation albums delivering serious music with a sense of humour. Their efforts and style were acknowledged in 2001 when the label was awarded a coveted Dance Star Award.

So there you go, three cd's of Hed Kandi bliss. It's simple really, if you don't like the idea, don't buy it, but if the thought of a soundtrack to your night out in a pretty pink box takes your fancy, this is the one for you. We'll certainly not be ridding of it just yet....
