Sam Fender’s headline set at Syd for Solen festival in Copenhagen over the weekend ended with more than just fireworks. As Fender launched into the closing moments of Hypersonic Missiles, climate activist Greta Thunberg and a group of fellow campaigners stepped into the spotlight, unfurling banners and delivering a passionate call to “Free Palestine.”
The surprise appearance came without warning to the crowd, who erupted in cheers and chants as Thunberg addressed the audience. Speaking alongside local and international activists, she linked the message of resistance in Fender’s music to ongoing calls for justice in Gaza, urging the thousands in attendance to take action and stay engaged.
The onstage moment quickly lit up social media, with fans sharing footage across Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). Many praised Fender for giving space to a political cause mid-set -especially during one of his most anthemic songs - while others noted the increasing presence of Palestine solidarity at major festivals across Europe this summer.
For Fender, who’s built a reputation for socially conscious songwriting and activism offstage, the move felt in step with his ethos. The North Shields musician has previously lent his voice to charity gigs and campaigns, and his willingness to share the platform with Thunberg’s group underscored the festival’s blend of music and message.
