House music went into mourning last week when news broke of the passing of the godfather of the music, Frankie Knuckles. A DJ in the truest sense of the term, it was the music he played which kick started the genre, a shortened version of the club where he infamously held a residency in Chicago, The Warehouse.

Tributes poured in to him, from DJ luminaries such as Greg Wilson and Dimitri from Paris (stream his heart stirring tribute mix above), the media (despite Frankie being relatively unknown outside dance music circles his death made the National Television news in the UK), and the social networks of thousands of dance music fans who recognised his unrepeatable contribution to a culture and scene they have fallen in love with.

Frankie's last set was in the UK, where he played at one of the first clubs to embrace his incredible acumen as a DJ on these shores, The Ministry of Sound. Saturday 12th April he was set to return, this time to Birmingham, alongside two fellow American powerhouses of the music, Todd Terry and the man with which he shared Def Mix and years of service to clubland, David Morales (who also delivered a stunning tribute mix below).

The event will still take place at Gatecrasher Birmingham, the night now a celebration of the huge impact Frankie's music and personality has had over the culture since his early days as a DJ in New York in the seventies, long before his work to create the genre of house.

Both Todd and Frankie will stay play the event, as will one of the most defining voices of house music and the vocallist on Frankie and Satoshi Tomie's timeless classic 'tears', Robert Owens, performing a live PA. Proceeds of the door fee will be sent to charity and you can learn more about the event at the listing here.
