Fabric unveil upgrade to Room 1 dancefloor - the first in 25 years

The final piece in the legendary club's renovation of their 'Room 1' sees them overhaul the Bodykinetic dancefloor to provide even more underfoot vibrations and deliver a "powerful and immersive tactile experience"

Date published: 3rd Feb 2025

With an extensive rework of their fabled Room 1 nearing completion - a renovation that began last year ahead of the venue's 25th birthday celebrations, fabric25 - Fabric announced on Friday (January 30th) that the final piece of the puzzle had been added. A complete upgrade to their signature 'body kinetic' dancefloor.

One of the only clubs in the world with such a system, the dance floor is the vision of Keith Reilly and Dave Parry and is rooted in the club's "commitment to preserving its legendary impact while embracing cutting-edge technology." Designed with Bodysonic transducers - silent subharmonics connecting dancers to music in a deeply physical way - in the floor, it creates a multisensory experience that feels like the music is vibrating through your body, and is a reason for Room 1's unique sonic character.

The upgrade is the first to the club's dancefloor since 1999 and sees the body-kinetic dancefloor brought into the future thanks to the venue's technical team, led by Matt Smith. The new dancefloor "incorporates Powersoft’s Movers — innovative Moving Magnet linear transducers — offering unparalleled haptic feedback and vibration clarity" and "Unlike the original system, which required over 450 tactile transducers, the Movers operate with just 36 units."

Basically, it's going to be more streamlined, more reliable, and have much more impact.

On the upgrade, Matt Smith said: “We’ve respected the floor’s history while making it even more immersive, the new system isn’t just an upgrade; it’s an evolution. The power, precision, and consistency are unmatched, enhancing the visceral connection between dancers and the music.” - Matt Smith

Funded partly by the National Lottery via Arts Council England, the upgrade will not only provide innovations on the tech and experience front, however. In collaborating with Deaf Rave, the new floor sees Fabric make strides forward in inclusivity, as "by transforming sound into tactile vibrations, the floor will enhance accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments."

The new dancefloor also paves the way for Fabric's groundbreaking residency with Mastery Quantum Sound, where they blend meditation with live electronic music. Led by Daniel Avery with collaborators like Hannah Holland and Flora Yin Wong, the series is ambient in nature, inviting attendees to lie down on the floor and truly feel the vibrations. The new series will feature five immersive events, concluding with a special performance in June 2025. Early access is available - HERE.
