Ahead of his first ever show in Manchester at Kraak on Tuesday (March 12th), prodigious London-based East India Youth will be playing an exclusive live session for DJ Marc Riley on his BBC Radio 6music show on Monday night.
Airing between 7pm-9pm, the 22 year-old - real name William Doyle - will be playing cuts from his debut EP Hostel, which will be the first ever release put out by respected music website The Quietus. Since they announcd the label, titled The Quietus Phonographic Corporation, there has been a wave of press coming through for both them and East India Youth himself. Lead track 'Heaven, How Long' has received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, The Guardian and The Fly, its mix of soaring vocal melodis and krautrock driven synth-pop becoming the talk of both the blogosphere and the wider press.
Doyle piqued the interest of Quietus editors John Doran and Luke Turner after approaching Doran at a Factory Floor show in London with a copy of his music. That demo album, Total Strife Forever, took Doran by such surprise that he elected to include it in The Quietus' Annual Jovian Bow Shock Awards shortlist (The Quietus alternative to the Mercury Prize). In John's own words “I'd always said that I'd cut my own head off using nail clippers before we started a record label. I'd learned too much from watching other sites and magazines pour all of their time, money and talent into them, just to watch them spectacularly implode. It was, I said, like withdrawing all your money from a cash machine and setting fire to it while simultaneously flushing your own head down a toilet filled with goat's piss.”
The Marc Riley session and the show at Kraak the night after (March 12th) mark East India Youth's first shows in the north of England, he'll be returning again in August for Beacons Festival in Yorkshire.
