Last week, UK rapper ENNY caused a stir among fans and peers after announcing that she will be leaving music to pursue a different career path by starting a cleaning business. She took to her Instagram, thanking her fans, and expressing her exhaustion in continuing to make music, saying "when something stops being fun, stop, and music has stopped being fun to make".
Many artists poured out their support, with the likes of Manchester artist IAMDDB and Mahalia, who commented, "we’re all with you sis follow where ur heart is leading and the biggest amount of luck on your next venture ❤️."
However, ENNY's early retirement turned out to be part of a rollout for the artist's latest single, 'Selfridges', which she captioned "Jig Is Up i guess… No new Business, just New music!" With the services labelled 'The Peng Black Girls Cleaning Company', a note to her previous project, which saw collaboration with Jorjia Smith.
'Selfridges' was created after a session with Leeds crew Gotts Street Park. ENNY spoke about the new track, saying, "This song came about after a session with Gotts Street Park to finish 'Mountains' in 2022. We had a little jam, nothing serious, they played, I wrote and drank a magnum as I did back then. I loved that the music was so happy-go-lucky, but I wasn’t."
I heard the demo again last year, and it still felt as fun as it did when we recorded it. And it reminded me that I just want to have fun and be as creatively alive when making music. And how do I make this feel more alive? We create a world around it! Take people on a journey of creating my own business outside of music, which, when announcing my career pivot, completely took me by surprise, with the outpour of love."
