Comedian James Acaster to revive band The Wow! Scenario

With their debut album to be released this October, check out a snippet of their first jazz-driven single, ‘Zacuti’.

Originally starting the project in Kettering in 2004, James Acaster and longtime friend Graeme Wicks have decided to give their band, The Wow! Scenario, another shot. After a short run which saw them get as far as recording an album in 2007 with producer Chris Hamilton, the pair shelved it without releasing a note.

The name forming after came from a drunk audience member trying to tell them they didn’t have ‘the X factor', but repeatedly got the term “wrong instead saying: 'You don’t have the wow scenario, guys. You need to get the wow scenario.'" The band gave it their best go, playing weekly gigs to small audiences until they eventually called it quits due to audiences not taking to their "acquired taste." 

However, after being dormant for 20 years, The Wow! Scenario have announced they are releasing their debut album, 'Stand in the Star. A Verse and a Chorus', on  Friday 23rd October. Ahead of the album release, the band have shared the first taster from the record, the jazz-driven 'Zacuti',  which you can listen to below.

Hamilton mixed the record three separate times between 2008 and 2025, while Acaster and Wicks gradually reshaped the project until it finally matched the version they'd heard in their heads all along. This took until March 2023 with singers BC Camplight and Emma Daman before it was mixed and completed in March 2025.

The album follows Acaster's 2023 collaborative project, Temps, which featured a 40-strong musical collective featuring Quelle Chris, Xenia Rubinos, Shamir, NNAMDÏ and Seb Rochford.
