Bad Bunny's headline slot at the Super Bowl halftime show last night delivered, amidst controversy from the president, a defiant performance that marked a significant moment for Latin music on one of the world’s biggest stages. The Puerto Rican artist became the first Latin male performer to headline the halftime show, and the first to lead the slot primarily in Spanish, following his previous appearance during Jennifer Lopez’s set in 2020.

The set moved fluidly through salsa, reggaeton and pop influences that have made Bad Bunny one of the planet's biggest stars. It was carried by huge choreography, fast-moving scene changes, a cast of dancers - among whom Cardi B, Karol G, Pedro Pascal and Jessica Alba were spotted - that embodied the culture's community, with superstars Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin also joining Bad Bunny on stage to get the world dancing.

Visually, the set shifted constantly, moving between elaborate environments from salsa ballrooms to towering telephone pylons. The spectacle was one of love and unity, with countless gyrating dancers, musicians, and flag-bearers on stage; the show championed all aspects of Latin culture in the US.

One of the night’s most talked-about moments came when Bad Bunny brought one of the three Grammy Awards he won last week on stage, handing it to a young child in the crowd, with the stunning wedding ceremony staged during the performance also reported to be legitimate.

Against the backdrop of wider political tension in the US, Bad Bunny’s halftime show landed as a clear statement of visibility, presence, unity, joy, and defiance, culminating with a clear message emboldening the screens: "The only thing more powerful than hate is love."
