BICEP have soundtracked a new audio-visual installation, TAKKUUK, that explores the lives, communities, and challenges facing Indigenous artists from the Arctic Region. A project which saw the Belfast producers working alongside Indigenous Arctic artists, visual collaborators, and global charity In Place of War.
Shot by Zak Norman (Squarepusher, Africa Express) and filmmaker Charlie Miller, TAKKUUK, which premiered earlier this month at Outernet London, blends original music, immersive visuals, and real-world storytelling to highlight the pressures faced by communities in the Arctic region - from environmental collapse to cultural displacement to traditions coming under threat.
The TAKKUUK Soundtrack is out via Ninja Tune on July 25th. Scroll down to see the tracklist, as well as where you can catch a screening of the audio-visual installation as it tours the world.
Created in collaboration with artists from Greenland, Canada, Norway, and Sweden, the project features Indigenous vocalists including Katarina Barruk, Andachan, Silla, Tarrak, NUIJA, Niilas and Sebastian Enequist. The resulting demos, combined with field samples captured by Andy Ferguson at the Russell Glacier in Greenland, form the backbone of this unique soundtrack, which Bicep then produced and recorded in their London studio.
Reflecting on the potential impact of the soundtrack and installation (in a recent interview with The Guardian), Andy Ferguson said: “You can’t quantify awareness. If it starts people on a journey to learn more about Greenland, then it’s achieved something.
“It’s easy to switch off with climate change. I switch off myself sometimes. But if you start telling the story in different ways, different narratives, ways people can visualise it, at least it’s a start. Because for the next generation it’s going to be the focal part of their life.”
TAKKUUK takes its name from the Inuktitut word for “look” - a command to pay attention. And this project does exactly that: confronting the realities of a warming world through music, community and immersive design, with BICEP at the heart of it.
