Todd Terry headlines Filth's 4th Birthday party in Leeds on February 12th. We caught up with the New York House pioneer to talk debt, staying out of jail and stealing lyrics from Usher...

Can you remember the first time you heard electronic music? Remember what you liked about it?

It was at Planet Rock, and I didn’t know where they got the sound from.

When did you first get into DJing and producing?

I got into DJing because I needed money for my Mom, so I played weddings.

And how has your musical taste evolved lately? What inspired you?

I inspired myself because I found some of my old sounds in my drum machine.

In terms of your own productions, are you still learning new stuff or are you happy with your skill set now?

I am happy with my junk.

Do you write the same way you always have, or have your methods changed over the years?

If I need new words I listen to an Usher album and steal them from him.

Do you DJ to the crowd, or do you play for yourself and hope they like or?

I definitely play for the crowd, otherwise I wouldn’t be here for 25 years!

What keeps you engaged in the game after all these years?

I owe seven banks money!

What can people expect from you at Filth?

Some of my old shit some of my new shit.

What else have you got coming up?

New records with Armand, Roger S, Junior Sanchez, Kenny Dope, Harry Choo Choo and Felix da Housecat, and DJ Pierre.

Have you any New Year's Resolutions?

Stay out of jail!
