Ask North West clubbers of a certain vintage what Electric Chair means to them and you can instantly tell their pedigree by the reaction. The ones that know their onions will exhibit a sort of glazed eye embodiment of wonder about one of Manchester's most revered, well loved and ardently missed soirees, a clubnight that genuinely provokes misty eyed adulation at the mere mention of it's name.
The shindig in the city's now defunct Music Box regularly enlisted some of the world's finest DJing talent for cross genre journeys into the outer reaches of dance music's vaults. Extended sets from the likes of Andrew Weatherall and Laurent Garnier (check his offering form 2003 below) still get talked in hushed tones, whilst artists such as Metro Area and Ame can call upon the early support of the club in establishing them in the UK club scene. And then there was the Unabombers, the musical spirit of the party distilled into one of the greatest resident pairings the UK club scene has witnessed.
Whilst Electric Chair ended in 2008, it's since spawned a myriad of fledgling enterprises shrouded in the original spirit of the club, notably the Electrik Bar and of course the gorgeous Electric Elephant festival. The perfect embodiment of that glorious era of clubland is the annual End of Year Riot (always on the 27th December), which this year takes places in Fac 251 The Factory with a line up that perfectly encapsulates everything great about the party.
A three roomed affair, Electric Chair Saved my life adorns the first theme with Horse Meat Disco, Chris Duckenfield and Il Bosco of Red Laser Records all contributing an ensemble of acid disco weirdness. Electric Elephant bring a Balearic Boat party in the second room, with Justin Robertson joined by the Unabombers and Joes Bakery for a cross genre excursion upon the high seas. Oh and there's some fella called Derrick Carter playing house music all night long in the third.
There's a limited number of earlybird tickets available but these go off sale on Sunday 1st December - after that it's the full price. Head here for more information.
