Biography

Val Wiseman began singing as a young girl and at the age of 18 joined a local jazz band. In 1963 she joined Monty Sunshine for three years and also sang at clubs, concerts and on radio with many other bands, including Alex Welsh, Humphrey Lyttelton and the Al Fairweather - Sandy Brown All Stars. In 1986 she sang with Eggy Ley’s Hot Shots at the Birmingham International Jazz Festival. This performance resulted in an invitation to headline the following year’s festival tribute to Billie Holiday. Entitled ‘Lady Sings the Blues’, this show continues to tour regularly throughout the UK and Europe, featuring leading jazz instrumentalists, including Digby Fairweather, Roy Williams, Alan Barnes and Len Skeat. A new live recording of the show at the 2015 Birmingham Festival, ‘Laughing at Life’, is released in June 2016 by Big Bear Records.

Val has also appeared in ‘Drummin’ Man’, singing the Anita O’Day songs from the Gene Krupa repertoire. She has recorded extensively, appearing on albums by King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, Sunshine, and the Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra. In addition to packages and as singer with several bands, Val has also toured as a solo artist and in these settings broadens her repertoire to include the great standards. She has performed in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Canada, and her vocal sound, warm, relaxed and with effortless swing, makes her one of the best singers working today.
