Biography

“Sour Mash serve up a healthy dose of old school-classic rock/metal sounds. In a laid-back manner, they manage to slap you in the face with charm and confidence, with an assertive, melodic rock sound that makes me want to raise my Jack Daniels and coke to them. This is a band that does not need to leap manically around the stage in order to grab your attention, their musicianship speaks - no, shouts loudly - for itself.” - Keely Anne Hill for www.fit4talent.com.

Sour Mash formed in late 2005 by founding members Adam Newbery and Dave Payne. The intention, to play music by the bands that they loved such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Motorhead to name just a few. It wasn't long before the duo started writing their own songs and recruited bassist (and Adam's brother) Ben to supply the low end. The line up was completed by drummer Shane Kiely. This quartet managed to write a number of songs which were recorded at home and used to get gigs. Over a few years Sour Mash gigged and wrote and managed to create the sound they were looking for. Sour Mash played at many venues in Birmingham and Coventry including The Actress and Bishop, The Flapper and Firkin, The Bar Academy and the The Golden Cross. The live performances were met with positive responses from audience members and other bands.

Shane was replaced on drums by Daniel (another of the Newbery boys) in 2009. At this point Dave's family commitments started to take over and he was unable to make a large number of shows. This resulted in him leaving the band in February 2011.

This was a major blow to the band and it left Adam on sole guitar duties. However, the trio carried on without pause. Songs were adapted to suit the new 3 piece format. In July 2011 Adam, Ben and Daniel went into Hellfire studios in Birmingham to record the band's first official E.P. Recordings of Open Range, The Last Stand and Hunted were completed in just 8 hours and the results were extremely satisfying. The E.P is a fresh take on the old school Heavy Metal genre with tight riff led grooves, aggressive but melodic vocal melodies and meaningful, heart felt lyrics. It is available to purchase on CD and online at iTunes and Amazon.

The new format has also allowed the band to start playing further afield and Sour Mash have now played in Gloucester, The Forest of Dean and Edinburgh. They are also due to play in Wales in the near future. The aim is still as it always has been, to play good honest heavy music and have a good time whilst doing it
