Biography

Philip Jeays was born in 1962 and raised in the south of England. He began performing in the 1980s, but didn't release his first album (October) until 1999. He is one of a few singers and songwriters (along with Des de Moor, Barb Jungr, Robb Johnson and others) who have sought to develop the profile of the "chanson" tradition in England.

Many of Jeays' songs display a barbed wit, delivered in a dramatic and often intense style. He acknowledges the influence of Jacques Brel and Jake Thackray, and he has also been compared to early David Bowie.

Jeays has produced six albums to date: October (1999); Cupid Is A Drunkard (2000); The Ballad of Ruben Garcia (2002); Fame (2003); Mr Jeays (2005); and London (2009).

Philip Jeays is best appreciated live. He sometimes performs solo, and sometimes with a band featuring David Harrod on piano. In 2006 he also started playing with the Fabulous Stapleton Sisters as his backing band.
