Phil is a pianist, singer, improviser and composer with classical training and many years of professional experience.

The kind of music Phil creates is often very intimate and always communicates with direct, spontaneous and authentic expressive power which comes from a deep place. He is not afraid of melancholy or beauty and has a rare gift for melody. His aim is to make music which reflects on the nature of reality in ways that words cannot express: it is all about love, loss, joy, the quest for meaning and ultimately the enigma of the human condition. He also is deeply fascinated by the inner fabric of the music and how the structures of tonality and rhythm really work. Yet despite these lofty artistic claims, there is nothing pretentious, contrived or self-conscious in his work; rather it is immediate and accessible.

Phil performs a wide repertoire of works by many different composers (including himself) and also improvises spontaneously on the piano. His eclectic musical tastes informs the styles of his compositions and improvisations which are all stamped with his own musical personality. The style is essentially contemporary, being a fusion of different elements from classical, jazz and popular musical traditions. Unattached to any particular musical ideology, he happily experiments, creating hybrids of classical, jazz and popular elements.
