Biography

At age 16 Nancy Litten entered the Royal Academy of Music on an open piano scholarship, winning prizes while there. Since then she has enjoyed a great variety of musical activities, performing as a pianist and violinist, in solo, chamber, and orchestral settings. She has studied with Christopher le Fleming, Julius Isserlis, Leslie England and Max Pirani (piano), Rex Stephens (piano accompaniment), Nellie Ben Or (Alexander technique at the piano), Bela de Csillery, Gillian Sansom, Lionel Bentley and Clarence Myerscough (violin), Kate Fish and Jenny Miller (voice), Eric Fenby (orchestration), and David Murphy (conducting.)

Since 1998 she has been an ABRSM examiner, and she also an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals. Since 2009 she has been on the Management Committee of EPTA UK (European Piano Teachers' Association) and she is also the Organiser of EPTA's Kent branch, which she founded. She has a wealth of experience as an accompanist and choral conductor, having worked with singers of all ages and standards. She currently conducts an adult chamber choir called The Dawn Chorus http://www.thedawnchorus.co.uk

Teaching has involved piano, keyboard, violin, chamber music, singing, choirs, and musicianship, in primary and secondary schools, boarding schools, specialist music schools, adult education, and her county music service. During the 1990s, Nancy was asked to group-teach electronic keyboard, and In 2000 she set up a Keyboard Orchestra for Kent, concerned that the players were not getting the same ensemble opportunities as other instrumentalists. Her composing and arranging skills were needed, as very little music is available for this medium. She was founder and director of National Electronic Keyboard Courses from 2005-2012, running many events for keyboard players and teachers, including two national summer schools. As an electronic keyboard consultant, she has worked with the Federation of Music Services on the 'Common Approach' (Faber 2002), the ABRSM on the development of Music Medals, and more recently with Trinity Guildhall, developing the 2011 syllabus (grades 1-5) and the 2013 syllabus (grades 6-8). Many of her pieces also appear in the current grade 1-5 syllabus. She is a writer and presenter, providing training for keyboard teachers as well as addressing other topics.

Having published five tutors for electronic keyboard, and a book of choral and vocal warm-ups for pianists, she is currently working on three violin tutors in Sharon Goodey's 'Playing With Colour' series.

Nancy is married, with children and grandchildren. Her hobbies are photography, and sketching (portraiture, mostly).
