Biography

Downpipe (sometimes stylised as DownPipe) are a versatile three piece from the Lake District, in the UK. Being predominantly influenced by the punk scenes of the 80's and 90's, they have a brash but distinctive sound, with additional influence coming from jazz, funk, metal and more.

The story begins in 2011 when Johnny Rothwell (vocals, guitar) and Dan Bench (bass, vocals) decided to build a band from the spare musicians in their social group, a task which initially proved ridiculously difficult. After a few months of tribulation they finally became a trio with Joe O'Doherty (drums, vocals), with AJ Tarrant (guitar, vocals) joining shortly after.

In the summer of 2012, having helped create the foundation that Downpipe sit on, Joe moved to the city and the band were back to square one. Months passed by, and the situation looked dire until the band were introduced to Sam Bowen-Wild (drums, vocals) in the November and everything was beautiful again. Downpipe continued as a four-piece until early 2014, releasing two demos, titled 'Bum-Man' and 'This Never Happens to Us. Honest...' before AJ left the band to return to further education.

The band spent the next year and a half gigging and writing new material, playing their first UK tour in June 2015. In December, Downpipe hit the studio and recorded material that would become the 'Dirt EP', the 'Malpractice (Makes Perfect)' single, and their debut album, 'Failing Into Place'. In the summer of 2016, the band played two small UK tours.
