Biography

"Fast-rising Glaswegian producer Boom Merchant is a man whose sound is hard to pigeonhole, but is draped in rich and sinewed quality regardless." - Data Transmission

"If you like tough, no bullshit house music that will make you dance, then Boom Merchant is for you." - theunderground

Boom Merchant is an artist whose work is characterised by a blend of rhythmic and harmonic elements, transporting the listener with a drive that is as physical as it is emotional. His studio work and his roaming sets combine tough analogue grooves with all manner of unusual instruments and hypnotic recordings plucked from all corners of the globe.

Following a string of successful releases with remixes from Dave Seaman and Pole Folder amongst others, his 2014 vinyl release Stars/Green Symphony on his own imprint Tribal Pulse broke new ground, with hang drums, horns and atmospherics cascading over analogue tones and robust drum work. DMC Mag described it as 'tough house for no nonsense dance floors that cannot fail to make you dance' and Data Transmission claimed it 'has all the makings of a future classic', with support coming from a wide range of prominent artists including John Digweed, Dave Seaman, Stacey Pullen and Hernan Cattaneo.

In 2015 he followed two well-received remixes for legendary Detroit techno label Motech with ‘Surge’, an electricity-inspired soundscape on Tribal Pulse. 2016 saw the release of his expansive Tales From the Void EP; 4 tracks on vinyl with renowned German imprint Resopal Schallware.

The explosive 'Night Drive', again on Tribal Pulse, received critical acclaim across the board, and set the tone for releases on a number of top labels in 2017, including the deep harmonics of 'Forest Drums' on Pole Folder's Reworck and the explosive power of 'Haka' and his 'Breach of the Peace' EP on Lonya's Asymmetric. The slamming TRIP009 EP was to follow on Tribal Pulse, again drawing support from all quarters. 2018 saw his return to Asymmetric with the 4-track Osaka EP, focused on distorted analog textures, dense percussion, all manor of tones drawn from the East and a flow that moves and connects the dancefloor. He continues to push the envelope with distinctive and dynamic sounds, with vinyl and digital releases scheduled this year on Tribal Pulse, Asymmetric & Nihil Young's Frequenza, and alongside Johnny Kaos on Decoded and Tribal Pulse.

Boom Merchant’s success in the studio has led to gigs across the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Malta and Italy and as far afield as Japan, and support slots for some of the world’s top DJs in Glasgow such as Dave Seaman, Robert Babicz, Ramon Tapia, Sandrien, Tyree Cooper, Kyle Hall and Silicone Soul. A keen supporter of vinyl, his marathon sets at locations across the city have become a favourite for many.
