Lineup and details for Richard III performed by Oddsocks on Friday 28th August 2009
“If laughing makes you younger…I am ten years younger.” Malvern Resident
'Delicious'..... 'What a troupe - and how Shakespeare would have loved them'...(The Stage 2007)
Internationally touring theatre company Oddsocks are on the road again this summer with a production of Richard III.
The mead is flowing freely as medieval England rejoices in the summer glow of peace after many years of vicious in-fighting between the houses of York and Lancaster. Songs are sung and music plays in the cheerful court of King Edward....
.....But not for long!
Suspicions are roused, rumours are rife and murders are meticulously planned. Richard, Duke of Gloucester has avaricious intentions on his brother's crown and his treacherous methods make Machiavelli look like Mickey Mouse.
Monstrous characters are brought outrageously to life amid the music, mayhem and comic chaos created by the multi-talented Oddsocks team. Another must-see production from this outstanding company who this summer celebrate their twentieth year of success.
You'd be a Shakespearean fool to miss out!
Review from the Stage, 8th July by Kevin Berry.
Shakespeare's piece of Tudor propaganda is given the Oddsocks treatment and what enormous, epic fun it is.
Wit, banter, physical ingenuity, clowning and comic inventiveness are everywhere. The young princes in the tower are in an upright bed, on the back wall, so their murders are played as if the audience is looking down on their bedroom. Quite a task for their assassin, Neal Craig, to get the perspective right, but he does - hilariously. Edward Day's Clarence is drowned on stage. He is a big chap and he is gradually forced into quite a small barrel before our very eyes.
For the battle of Bosworth the company's magnificent Tudor play cart is turned around and opened out to show a vista of tents, towers and banners. Then come the principal protagonists, helmeted and prancing on pro-jumps. It is a stirring sight and then the fun continues.
Andy Barrow's Richard III is a simpering, camp villain with a fascinating snozzle. His seduction of Lady Anne, played by Harriet Rose, is gloriously over the top.
The actors are kept busy playing many characters at brisk pace and they rarely look flustered. Harriet Rose, with eight parts and three musical instruments, typifies their exuberance and dedication. They involve the audience in so many memorable ways.
