MIKE "THE QUADFATHER" KNOWLER (Quadrant Park, The State, Hard Dock, LIFE@ Legend)

Mike Knowler.

The year: 1990. The city: Liverpool. The hottest club in town was Quadrant Park. Mike Knowler was the DJ, and this is his story.

The Quadfather returns after massive demand to the Northern Project after he ripped the roof off back in Sept 2010 for us. Mike's career started in 1969 in the Starlight Room at Southports Kingsway Casino. Resident DJ Baby Bob Stewart, about to start at Radio Luxembourg, had offered Mike his job out of the blue. Music policy at the Kingsway was rare soul and R n B, which suited Mikes record collection just fine. He was only 17, and he shared the spot with Ormskirk DJ Phil Sawyer.

Two years later, music policy at the Kingsway became more mainstream. Mike moved to a more intimate Southport venue, the Nest Club, owned by local bookie Alec Morris. At the time Mike had changed his musical allegiance to street funk. He was the first Southport DJ to play James Brown, Bobby Byrd and the JBs. Mike only lasted a few months at the Nest. Wages were meagre and he now had a wife to support.

In 1970 Mike met Dave Kay who, along with Jeff Hartley, ran a successful mobile disco road show. It was called Radio Doom Good Guys, and Mike wanted a piece of the action. Mike and Phil Sawyer started off at Radio Doom as Northern Soul dancers! Then Jeff quit, and Mike took over as DJ in 1972. The job at Radio Doom lasted six years.

In 1978 Mike joined Open Eye, a community communications and media project. He designed and built an eight-track recording studio, and established two record labels: Zoo Records and Open Eye Records. He was a pioneer of the new Merseybeat, working with bands like Big in Japan, Dead or Alive, OMD, the Teardrop Explodes and Echo & the Bunnymen. Both the studio and the record labels were a great hit locally. While at Open Eye Mike was studying for an HNC at Preston Poly. He became social secretary for the Students Union, and spent three years as a student DJ and events organiser. In 1981, with the HNC finished, Mike left Open Eye to study full-time at Liverpool University. Leaving Open Eye was a wrench, but he hadnt had a hit record!

After leaving Preston Mike carried on as a DJ at the Poly. At a Theatre of Hate gig he met Andy Carroll, a Southport DJ. Andy invited Mike to join him as a DJ at a club in Southport called Sandbaggers. They worked together from 1982 to 84, playing stuff like the Cure, New Order, Southern Death Cult, Kraftwerk, the Clash and A Certain Ratio. Mike also played one gig for the Liverpool Uni Guild of Students: the 1984 Summer Ball with Curtis Mayfield.

Mike graduated in July 1984. He then took up residency at the Cavern an exact replica of the club where the Beatles made their name. He did lunchtime sessions six days a week, with fresh local talent, just as Bob Wooler did in the early sixties. The sessions were a runaway success. Then, later in 1984, Mike became resident DJ at the State Ballroom. Mike and his old mate Andy Carroll played music such as Talking Heads, Simple Minds, U2, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and New Order.

1988 saw the second Summer of Love. At that time Mike and Andy met up with James Barton, later of Cream fame. James wanted them to DJ at Liverpools first regular acid house event. Luckily Mike and Andy had been turned on to house after separate trips to New Yorks New Music Seminar. Monday nights (styled Daisy) were such a hit that the State moved over to house music exclusively, every night, until it was forced to close in 1989. The indie kids had been ousted!

After a brief stint at the Twilight Zone in Duke Street, the stage was set for Quadrant Park in Bootle. Mike first played at the Quad at a Christmas dance for the students of Hugh Baird College. In 1990 he became resident DJ for the three main nights at the Quad, with Andy Carroll sharing on Saturdays. The end of the year saw the start of the legendary Allnighters, when James Barton and John Kelly joined the team. The Quad Allnighter is fondly remembered by Scouse clubbers as the biggest thing to happen on their scene. And it was legal! The music was proper house, as opposed to techno or hardcore. A young man tragically died at the Quad, but that wasnt why the club closed. Door prices went up, security went down and the venue needed a makeover. Punters voted with their feet and the house scene moved elsewhere. By 1992 the Quad was no more.

Also in 1990 Mike had been contacted by Dave Graham, resident DJ at the Drome in Birkenhead. Dave wanted to change the music policy to house, so he asked Mike to help out on Friday nights. For part of 1991 Mike took a break from the Quad and did his stuff at the Drome on Fridays. The night was called Life and it moved on to Bowlers at Trafford Park.

In 1991 Mike was approached by club promoters Nicki Dee and Billy Gillbank. They wanted him to play Friday nights at a new venue, the Hard Dock Café. At the time the Quad was feeling the heat from other places like Club 051 and the Academy. So Mike started at the Hard Dock playing alongside Alan James. Following the demise of the Quad, Mike became main resident DJ at the Hard Dock on Fridays and Saturdays. Music policy was techno and hardcore, with guest appearances from artists like Carl Cox and Groove Rider. Feeling that such music had had its day, Mike left the Hard Dock in 1994.

He was also appearing as a guest DJ at a number of venues. The most noteworthy was the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool, at concerts promoted by James Barton and Andy Carroll. These concerts featured artists such as Adamski, Katherine E, K Klass, the Prodigy, N Joi and Quadrophonia. Mike also played at Cleos in Wolverhampton, alongside Laurent Garnier; the Inn on the Park on Jersey with Robbie Edwards and Eric Powell; and Sheffield Poly with John Peel.

An important part of Mikes career was regular guest appearances at Old Skool / Anthem / Retro nights across the North West. The first was Anthem City, in 1993, at Club 051. Other appearances included: Ultimate Revival at Life in Trafford Park; Passion at Maximes in Wigan; Best of British at the Buzz Club in Liverpool; Anthem Mania at the Drome; and the Anthem City Tour at Calistos in Huddersfield. Recent retro appearances, in 2003-05, have been for HayzyDays nights at Club Zanzibar in Liverpool.

In 1995 Mike moved into the pre-club bar scene. He started an 18-month residency at the Gallery Bar in Liverpools Concert Square. The bar was owned by Peter Lee of Metro Bar fame. Mike now had an excellent chance to play upfront American-import house: the kind of stuff played at Back to Basics in Leeds and Ministry of Sound in London. For the first time he was playing for an audience who were listening, not dancing! Without the need to drive the dance floor, Mike could be more experimental. At the time new house music was breaking through built upon themes from soul, funk, disco and jazz. Mike left the Gallery when he heard rumours that the bar was to be sold.

He moved to Southport to work for Craig Carloss at a new bar called the Glasshouse. He was working four or five nights a week. Thursday was 1970s funk and disco; Friday and Saturday were upfront US-import house; and Sunday was Back to the Old Skool house anthems. After a dispute with the owner Mike moved to Bar None, Southports newest trendy bar. Fridays featured US house; Thursdays featured soul, funk, disco and jazz.

In 1999 Mike Knowler retired as a full-time DJ, after a career spanning 30 years. He can truly be called the godfather or is it the Quadfather of Liverpool house music.

ANDY SENIOR (Illegal Revenge Parties, Sequins, Park Hall Legend)

I got my first pair of decks in 1987 and the same year got my first club slot along side Joe Henry and Fergie at the Adam & Eve in Blackpool followed shortly by Just Jis,The Village and Sequins..

In early 1989 I started going over to Blackburn and over the next 3 years I was involved in the infamous Revenge Warehouse Parties whilst playing various other Northwest Venues inc Monroes,Hacketts,Park Hall and Manhatton Heights..

I have always been a clubber as much as a DJ and when not on the decks can usually be found bouncing off nearby walls and generally being quite funny

Over the years I've had the privilege to spin alongside some great DJs like Sasha,John Kelly,Nipper, Laurent Garnier, Rocky & Diesel, Rob Tissera,Radio ones Fergie,Rob Da bank John J &Greenbins and in a few of Europes great venues inc Heaven - London, The Music Factory - Birmingham along with several stints in Ibiza at Es Paradise, Bar M, Mezzanine, Pacha and Summum..

I have also recently started writing music again so new songs on the horizon :)

BOWA (Pleasure Drome, Bowlers, Monroes, Wigan Pier Legend)

I started my clubbin' days in late 89 at a club called The Thunderdome in Manchester. The atmosphere was something special and i believe there was no other club like it at the time. From there i continued my nights at the Hacienda listening to a guy who inspired me into playing music. This guy was Sasha - A true legend in Manchester! Followed him to nights in Amnesia in Coventry, Shelly's in Stoke, Shaboos in Blackpool where he was working with Dave Seaman another great DJ. I started my DJ'ing career warming up for Kenny Grogan at The Pleasuredome in Farnworth 1991, which was a well established night and was one of the pioneer rave clubs in the North West at its time. I then went onto a place called The Buzz Club in Preston warming up for the likes of DJ Welly. In 1992 i started DJ'ing in the small room of Life@Bowlers. Due to popularity and the rise of Life in being the biggest weekly event in the UK the management of Life approached me and asked me to DJ in the main room in 1994. This was to be my biggest residency to date, playing to a 4,000+ strong crowd each and every week for 4 years. In my time as resident at Life i was able to DJ with the likes of, Carl Cox, Parks and Wilson, DJ Welly, DJ Nipper, Stu Allan, Matt Bell, Judge Jules, Alistair Whitehead, Rob Tissera, Vertigo, Paul Taylor, Paul Walker, David Dunne and my good mate John Waddicker just to name a few. Then i was approached by Wigan Pier to become their Saturday night weekly resident from 1997-2002. Wigan Pier became full to capacity for many of the Saturday nights in which i was a part of with the likes of DJ Welly. Over the past 17 years i have been able to share my music style and mixing abilities at many clubs up & down the country during my Dj career, such as Monroe's 1993-1996 & Cricketers 1994-95. I have done many DJ gigs in and around the Blackburn area in the early 90's rave scene. You can mainly see me playing these days at old skool events...

ANDY GARVEY (Legends Rewind Legend)

Hello Everybody, Andy Garvey here!
This is just a bit about myself and how i got into Mixin and Scratchin on the wheels of steel, started back in the 80s, i was buying all the classic Electro Albums by Street Sounds..
Thats the 1st time i ever heard mixin and scratchin, i went out and bought myself a cheap set of decks and an old 2 channel Tandy mixer then started looking to start my collection of records, Manchester,
Liverpool was the places to buy records at the time.. I Was Hooked!!
I learned myself how to mix and scratch and now ive been doin it for almost 26 years..
My 1st gig was at Maximes, the night was Revenge 3, DJ Nipper & DJ Welly played that night, i was shaking like a leaf but after 20 minutes of playing my set the nerves went out the window and i enjoyed it, now DJing comes natural to me these days , its my life! i dont just do DJ sets , i take a box of tunes and start with 1 track and go from there, simple as that!
Heres a list of Djs i once played with and hope to play with again in the future: DJ Sasha, DJ Vertigo, DJ Nipper, DJ Welly, DJ Noggy (Legends), DJ Mike Woods (Legends), DJ Stu Allan, DJ Adam Wilson, DJ Kev Sweeney....

MATT BELL (Zone Legend/Empire/Angels/Northern Project)

DJ Matt Bell, this Zone Legend started an interest in DJing whilst watching Djs at Blackburn raves back in 1988. Started putting on illegal parties in Preston and then moved onto clubs in 1990 which was Adam n eves in Blackpool. After this shut down, I played regularly at Love Shack on Fridays and then got the break at ZOne. I was a resident there and the Empire at Morecambe until around 1995 when I left and started a residency at Feel in Preston and Angels in Burnley where I played with a whole host of superstar DJs such as Sasha, Carl Cox, Tongy to name but a few. I've also done Bowlers, Fun at Birmingham and Ibiza plus loads of other events, some memorable, some not so..
Although I love new music, Old skool is where its at for me. Matt was gonna hang his headphones up in September 2010 due to work commitiments, but we are glad to say Matt is now able to become a resident Dj for the Northern Project

LEE GARRY (Wigan Pier D.A.D. Legend/Northern Project)

This Wigan Pier Legend is a DJ and Co-Promoter of The Northern Project and has Djing flowing through his blood, starting out in 1991 at the Legendary Wigan Pier Dreaming a Dream , DJing with DJ Malc , DJ Ruddy , DJ Lee Turner...also Satisfy on Saturdays along side the likes of DJs Mike E Bloc , DJ Malc T, Danny Hybrid , Dave Seaman , Pete Tong , Eric Powell , Craig Walsh , DJ Nipper , Lee recently rocked the house at the D.A.D Reunion and at the Northern Project showing us old skool never dies.

REG (Monroes/Maximes Legend/Northern Project)

I have been DJ-ing now for about 22 years. I was always into hip hop as a teenager but going to my local club the Pleasuredrome in Farnworth UK and watching the likes of DJ legend Sasha made me want to get involved in the House music scene. I started DJ-ing professionally at a club called Monroes in Great Harwood, near Blackburn, which although only small had a great reputation across the North-West in the early 90s for its house music and atmosphere. I left Monroes after 4 fantastic years and I moved onto Maximes in Wigan, working with an agency called Hypnotic promotions. Being with Hypnotic allowed me to play at such venues as The Hacienda (Manchester), Mr Smiths (Warrington), Park Hall (Wigan) and The Dry Bar (Manchester). After a couple of years I moved onto Federation in Blackpool, playing house music along side DJs Scott Bond, Alex P, Danielle Davoli and Smokin Jo to name just a few. I have since played at a multitude of clubs around the North of England and Europe alongside DJs Dave Morales, Sonique, Graeme Park, Joey Negro, DJ Disciple, Jim Shaft Ryan, Oliver Lang, Lottie, Mark Luvdup and Tim Lennox. I then co-promoted our own club nights under the name Souled Out. Our regular monthly events took place at various venues in the north west including sankeys soap also a new venue in london called the copyright club nr London bridge. Also a project called BACK TO FUNK which is organising parties playing upfront funky house etc.. I also got involved with an events organisation in Amsterdam where I have been flying there on a regular basis playing at there events with djs including Jorgensen, Marcella, Lucien Foort, Martijn Ten Velden to name a few And also we have been able to produce a few dance tracks of our own which up to now have not been signed but we are still hopeful.. These trax can be heard on myspace page:-www.myspace.com/djdamianlee I love the soulful / funky house vibe oh and of course old skool. I play music that is uplifting and often very vocal with a feel good sound primarily because it is the music that I enjoy and also because I feel it brings out the best kind of emotion from the crowd. I have more recently also started playing a slower funky house disco vibe similar to that of artists such as the unabombers, moodymann, trus-me and greg wilson to name a few. I am currently Co-Promoterer of THE NORTHERN PROJECT with ASH and LEE GARRY and have a great following of friends and old skool fans alike and im sure this new project can only blow up over time

ASH (Northern Project Legend)

This guy is a big part of The Northern Project and was bang at it with all you true Old Skool ravers back in the day on the Northern scene.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/DJ-ASH-THE-NORTHERN-PROJECT/113437155370639

THIS IS MY HOUSE!!!!

l started getting into djing about in about 1993 after raving all over the North and collecting tunes on vinyl. l decided l wanted mix music how l liked to hear it be played, "PUMPING AND UPLIFTING!!! Legendary DJ's like Matt Bell & Andy D (Now these fella's being my main influence), Barrie Jay, John J, Andy D, Chris Baker, mainly the early Zone team(What a wicked place that was in Blackpool!!!) (They were top dj's on the Blackpool and Northern scene back then! they mostly played Happy Uplfting Vocal Italian Paino tunes and Blackpool was defo the place for this style of uplifting music in the North to me. To me you could'nt beat them tunes back then, so that was my path chosen along with the best tunes from all the other clubs and parties up North that l liked and collected!!) they became a big influence on me,(plus many others with different style's and big tunes!! e.g. Welly, Nipper, Paul Taylor, Dave Graham, Mike Knowler, Carl Cox, Stu Allen, Vertigo, Rob Tissera, Noggy, Moggy, Daz Willott, XTC, Craig C, Bowa, Reg, Ruddy, Lee Garry, Lee Turner, Mike E Bloc and Malc T from Wigan Pier plus many many more)

In the mid 90s l was just pumping tunes out at party's and the odd club here and there. l had the chance to play at Monroe's(Blackburn) and Sequins(Blackpool) in the mid 90's but never got to the clubs like a TIT (transport issue's and a too short notice phonecall Grrr They thought l had knocked them back) BIG REGRETS FOR ME!! l kicked it where ever l played at some mad private parties and the clubs l have played!! Some of you will remember l did 4 naughty but fun illegal all-nighters in the hills around Haslingden near Blackburn which were mental! until the plod sussed us the Jerters!!!! aswell as other bits n bats but nowt really special, well not to me anyway! Then l got proper job in 1997 thinking it was all over! PMSL, LOL, ROFL, CIA, SAS, FBI, D.I.S.C.O, RSPCA n all that bollix as a Postie and that started my chillax in the club scene life!

Got into being a hip-hop turntablist (ya know cuttin n scratchin) around 2000/01 for a couple of years on the personal front then gave up thinking it was all over!.... How wrong was l. LOL!

2010 Enter into my life the ability to re-connect with old friends that l thought l would defo never see again through Facebook and BOOM HERE WE GO AGAIN!! WITH THE NORTHEN PROJECT

And those of you who have attended any off the Northern Project's party's will vouch this guy knows how to get you on the dancefloor and keep you there. Ash is a resident DJ and Co-Promoter for the Northern Project.
