Lineup and details for Ghost Hunt - Ghost Hunting at Nothe Fort on Saturday 12th May 2012
Dare you carry out a lone vigil in the labyrinth of tunnels.
Nothe Fort is not an investigation we would recommend for the faint hearted. Paranormal activity at the location is vast, with many reports of eerie voices, shadows, physical contact and not forgetting poltergeist activity. Nothe Fort is reported to be alive with paranormal phenomena !
In 1860 the site which is now Nothe Fort was chosen to house a coastal defence as protection against the then threat from French attack.
The fort is constructed on three levels. The lowest level, Magazine Level, was originally designed to store gunpowder and shells. The middle level, Gun Deck Level, was designed to accommodate 12 heavy muzzle loaded cannons and provide accommodation for the soldiers manning the cannons. The top level formed the ramparts and provided a raised platform that could be used to fire muskets and light muzzle loaded cannons during an attack on the fort.
The fort was commissioned in 1872 at a cost of £120,000
The fort retained its important role during the 1st and 2nd world Wars. Acting mainly in the role of air defence against the Luffwaffe Invaders. Weapons were continuously upgraded to play there role in the defence of the nation.
Coast defence was abandoned in 1956 and as a consequence the fort was no longer required to protect the entrance to Portland Harbour. For the following 5 years the fort was used to house naval stores and degaussing equipment.
During the Cold War Period the fort was used as a nuclear shelter for civil administration. Approximately a third of the Magazine Level was converted into command and accommodation areas protected by heavy blast doors.
Located at the entrance to Weymouth Harbour the Fort is a labyrinth of underground passageways and outdoor areas with stunning views of the Jurassic Coast. Constructed on three levels , which are easily accessed by means of a lift, the Fort is filled with displays, mammoth guns and cinema areas that chart the history of this large and magnificent Victorian structure. Nothe Fort is now one of Weymouths major attractions aswell as the most haunted location in the area.
The Fort is a truly amazing location for a ghost hunt and investigation. Its history is etched into the very fabric of the building. Its Labyrinth of walkways and tunnels which Soldiers and Sailors once walked are alive with there energy. Reports of paranormal activity at the fort are wide spread. These reports include:
A legendary ghostly whistling gunner, many people claim to have heard his eerie whistling in the Fort's extensive underground passageways. Tales of this phantom have been talked about for decades around Weymouth and the Fort affectionately has a passageway dedicated to him. Who this 'shade' actually is, is at this time, unknown.
During a previous vigil in the area, with approximately 12 guests present, a member of our team was calling out asking for the spirit to copy him.
All the guests heard this with their own ears and were shocked and amazed.
Other eye witness reports are that of a white figure seen walking the parapets of the building when it is locked and there should be nobody there.
Reports of dark shadows in the corners of rooms, mysteriously appearing and then vanishing before re-appearing in a different corner of the room.
Eerie whispers into visitors ears, leaving them afraid and un nerved.
Reports of physical contact, as if somebody had brushed past them in a rush.
Strange light anomalies appearing for no apparent reason in the darker areas of the fort.
Poltergeist activity which has left guests panic stricken.
A survey carried out in 2007 by The National Lottery discovered that the Fort was voted one of the spookiest locations in the UK; in fact staff members sometimes refuse to visit certain areas by themselves.
With the already reported phenomena at this location will we encounter what previous visitors have witnessed.
