History of The Manor House
Situated in West Bromwich, The Manor House is a magnificent, Grade I listed, timber beamed property that dates back in places to the 1270s. It was extended and added to during the 15th and 16th Centuries, the frontage shown in the picture above is only a small fraction of the building. Surrounded by a moat, thought to be original to the time of building, it remained a residential property until the 1880's when it was concealed behind modern brickwork and split into flats. Tragically, by the 1950s it was run down and derelict, however on clearing local 'slums' the original building was rediscovered and thankfully saved from demolition. It was opened as a pub and restaurant in 1961, and so it remained until 2008 when it closed its doors for the last time, its future uncertain.
Once again, it was saved for future generations by Sandwell Council, who have spent the past few years restoring it to its former glory as a medieval manor house. It is now partially open as a museum, with plans to further restore and furnish the building with a view to it being opened permanently.
Ghosts of The Manor House
Eerie Evenings ran public paranormal investigations at The Manor House from 2005 until it closed in 2008. During that time, it became one of our favourite venues and rarely disappointed with paranormal activity. In fact, several of our team members had their most convincing experiences there, including balls of light floating across the room, heavy footsteps belonging to no-one, the full apparition of a monk, exploding light bulbs and slamming doors. All of these things happened to members of our staff not only during the event but while setting up at the start of the event and clearing away at the end, once the guests had gone home, which in our experience is very unusual.
The Manor House has long been regarded as a very haunted building and almost immediately upon its opening in 1961 as a pub and restaurant, people were experiencing strange phenomena, and this hasn't ceased in over 50 years. For example, several landlords/landladies got so used to hearing their name called when they were alone in the building that it no longer bothered them. Doors opening and closing all by themselves, and objects being moved by unseen hands became everyday occurrences for the building's inhabitants.
Apparitions include a bearded man seen looking forlornly out of a window. A grey haired old lady and a cloaked figure gliding down stairs and through closed doors have also been witnessed, as well as a young girl looking out from the top, inaccessible floor and frequent tales of a black cat darting through people's legs on the staircase leading down into the great hall. This apparent animal spirit has been seen several times since The Manor House has reopened as a museum too.
We have more stories to tell you on the night, given the rich and varied paranormal history of thelocation. As you are probably aware, building and restoration work seems to increase the amount of paranormal activity in a building, so we have very high hopes for The Manor House as we make our long-awaited return in 2012!
