Lineup and details for Orpheus in the Underworld on Saturday 24th March 2012
Orpheus in The Underworld has its roots in Ancient Greek Mythology and made famous by the opera Orpheus and Eurydice by Gluck. Here, however, is where the similarities cease. Where the myth is filled with angst and misery in the name of love, Orpheus in the Underworld is a show full of humour, fun and light-hearted frolics. Well see a twisting story of mistaken identities, love-hate relationships and misbehaving Gods. Orpheus, led reluctantly by his mother, takes us on a trip to reclaim his stolen wife, Eurydice, from the depths of Hades where she awaits someone to save her from a tedious and unfulfilled life. On the way well discover that the Gods are not as stuffy or as wholesome as they would have us know and join them for an orgiastic party to put all others to shame before seeing that love finds a way and conquers all adversity.
Essentially a pantomime for grown-ups, this show promises to entertain, with an energetic and enthusiastic chorus and a talented cast of principals who will bring this performance hilariously to life. With beautiful music and a libretto to make even the most humour-challenged theatregoer laugh out loud directed with a twist for the final act that will not fail to entertain, Orpheus in The Underworld has something to offer everyone. So join us for laughter, good music and of course the infamous Infernal Galop, better known as the Can-Can. Thats right; our dancers will perform for you the controversial, but never dull, Can-Can in the show from which it originated!
