Evolution Music Festival in Newcastle - 23rd-26th of May
 
Evolution is the biggest almost FREE music festival in the North East of England, with a crowd of 50,000 expected over the weekend and culminating in the Freevolution outdoor show at Spiller's Wharf and Baltic Square on the Gateshead quayside on Monday 26th May.
 
With 3 stages along the quay and 30 indoor gigs around it, the Evolution festival will host a wide spectrum of music, taking the festival goer from jazz to punk, from reggae to folk.

Confirmed artists for the Spillers Wharf are The Streets, Kate Nash, Reverend And The Makers, Duffy, Glasvegas, Lightspeed Champion, The Whip, and This Ain't Vegas.

The line-up for the Baltic Square stage is CSS, New Young Pony Club, Crystal Castles, Does It Offend You Yeah?, Hercules And The Love Affair, Who Made Who, The Ghost Frequency, and Kinevil.

On Sunday 25th May the Baltic Square Stage has the Southern Fried Mobile Disco hosting DJ sets from Armand Van Helden, Audio Bullies, Caged Baby, Leatherhead, Nathan Detroit and Jam Warm. Tickets for this event are £23.

The programme starts at various venues on Friday with The Blackbyrds and Baker Brothers at The Cluny. Razzmatazzlorryexcitement, The Small Screen Lightshow, Spies In Limbo, Left At Montreal, Stars of Track and Field at Northumbria University. Tiga, Ivan Smagghe, Brodinski, People Get Real, and PreAmptive VJs at Digital.

Saturday sees Sons and Daughters and The Wild Beasts play Sage, Gateshead, The Felice Brothers, Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles at The Cluny, and BP3D featuring 3D Disco at Carling Academy.

Sunday has Dave Honeyboy Edwards & Matt Anderson at The Cluny, and Seth Lakeman plus support at Hall One, Sage. The indoor programme announced concludes on Monday with a Canadian Special The Wailing Jennys, and Stephen Fearing at the Little Theatre, Gateshead.

Tickets for the indoor programme vary from £5 to £16.50 depending on the event.

The week running up to Evolution 2008 will also feature a set of participatory events under the banner of 'The Know How' with industry names sharing their thoughts and experiences for the education of local musicians and music businesses. Premier amongst these will be a session with former EMI chairman and CEO, Tony Wadsworth, entitled 'What's happened to the record industry' a seminar at the Sage. There are three other sessions featuring CEO's, Heads of music and A&R, producers, directors, pluggers and songwriters. The programme culminates with Laurence Bell telling the story of Domino Records on Saturday 24th May.
