8PM TIL LATE
"Yet another serving of pure gold from Kranky records comes in the form of the swirling ambient sounds of Rob Lowe's 'Lichens'. (Rob Lowe the TV on the Radio collaborator and 90 Day Men bassist, not the actor of course). With ethereal low end sounds akin to something off the Twin Peaks soundtrack combined with Lowe's haunting vocal sounds and gently picked guitars, Lichens is music to take you away to another place. Quick (or lazy) reference points would be the likes of Stars of the Lid, Growing, or even Sigur Ros at their their most absolute minimal, but in all truth you'd need to hear it for yourself to fully take on board what Lichens is all about. Sadly there's no MySpace, but Boomkat have a few clips and more nice words to say here BOOMKAT LICHENS Also performing will be another project of Lowe's, White/Lichens. The collaboration between Lichens and the heavy drone kings White/Light, White/Lichens is a more intense take on things. Darker, heavier, and veering more into the territory of Earth 2, their set will take place just before and lead into Lichens' performance."
Marvin are Emilie, Fred and Greg, a guitar-drums-keyboards three piece from Montpellier, France. Marvin like to have fun, and want you to have some too. Eschewing the pretense and po-facedness that so often seems to come as part of the territory of DIY music, Marvin make blistering, noisy and truly joyful pop. Pounding drums and walloping riffs are offset by quirky, catchy analogue synth melodies, the result being something akin to a heavier Devo, the poppiest moments of Lightning Bolt or the tight, proggy silliness of Oxes or Trans Am. Vocals come in the form of simple refrains, chants and yelps, which seem somehow like the appropriate response to the primitive energy and joy generated by three musicians bouncing playful melodies and rhythms off each other. Throw in a bit of The Boredoms and Pere Ubu, and you'll start to understand the fun you'll have here. Put simply, this is party music for dancing to and what's wrong with that?
