Sankeys Saturdays - John Dahlback and Style of Eye

There’s a degree of Scandinavian goodness permeating from the Ancoats Mill for this Saturday shindig. Sweden has given us safe motoring, flat pack wardrobes and a bevy of eye-gaggling beauties over the years, but prior to the twenty first century the musical output was focused on soaring falsetto melodies and beards. That misplaced stereotype has been shoved out of the picture though, as the Swedes set about claiming a lofty place in dance music’s aristocracy with a glut of house music impresarios.

Two of them are in tow for this party with Sankeys. John Dahlback is the headline act, a blistering tycoon of bass heavy electro house and rump shaking grooves. First coming to prominence in the mid part of the last century, the younger cousin of Jesper stole the family limelight (even more difficult considering his mother’s jazz band singing and his dad’s previous programming in a prog rock band) with a barrage of acid soaked house. But just as his rep blossomed for getting nasty, John found a way to attribute his sound to a bigger concept, not losing any of the gutter vibe yet bringing a more accessible edge.

That sound is now all about jackhammer beats and razor synths; epic breakdowns bursting from visceral house beats. His own Pickadoll imprint has brought music to the forefront from Zoo Brazil, Laidback Luke and Sebastian Leger, whilst the DJ gigs have been aside fellow Scandinavian club titans Angello and Ingrosso as well as other bona fide heroes such as Pete Tong. This is big room house music with all the trimmings.

Joining him is fellow Swede Linus Eklow aka Style of Eye. Boasting an extremely prolific recording career which has veered from oddball jacking house on Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s Classic Recordings to monstrous Ibiza anthems for Dahlback’s Pickadoll, Style of Eye is the sound of the new decade. His omnipresent ‘The Big Kazoo’ inked a deal with Claude von Stroke’s DirtyBird imprint in 2008 and swiftly elicited world domination, featuring a memorable riff from the aboriginal instrument and support by everyone and anyone over the last eighteen months.

Remixes have come for Lily Allen, Empire of the Sun and Moby, with support ranging from house stalwarts Heidi, Jesse Rose, Spencer Parker and Nic Fanciulli to big league hitters such as Laurent Garnier, Sven Vath and Carl Cox. A recent mix disc alongside Justin Martin for MoS Australia showcased a sound that has been at the forefront of dancefloors across the globe, justifying why Eklow remains a hotly in demand DJ. Expect fireworks for this Sankeys soiree.
