‘Spring Awakening’ is written by the celebrated German playwright Frank Wedekind.

Written sometime between autumn 1890 and spring 1891, this play tells the tale of a small town bourgeois society that is unquestioning in its acceptance of the law: the kids answer to the adults and the adults answer to the state.

The story follows three adolescents who find themselves helpless submitting to their internal demands. Wendla, Melchior and Moritz have a burning curiosity to discover sex, rebellion and individual freedom; can free spirits ever exist in the herd?

In a deliberate departure from the realism of Stanislavski, Frank Wedekind presents a shocking tragedy written as a brutally authentic comedy.

This production will combine Wedekind’s original dialogue with stylised elements of theatre.

Our main source of inspiration is Piet Mondrian’s painting ‘A Composition with Black, Red, Gray, Yellow, and Blue’. This painting depicts three colours that are separated from one another by rigid black lines and stark white blocks. These three colours exist in the fibre of everything around us and will symbolise the free and untainted nature of the children. The restraint of the black and white reveals the adults’ creation of a harshly repressive society.

Moving away from the play’s original context of late 19th century Germany, we hope to illuminate the timeless significance of this momentous play.
