Lineup and Details for DEAD BELGIAN on Thu 9th August 2012
Dead Belgian are a Liverpool-based quartet who play the songs of the late Belgian singer/songwriter Jacques Brel. For those unfamiliar with his work, Brel created and performed a significant catalogue of literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that brought him a large, devoted following in France. His audience eventually extended internationally, making him a major influence on English-speaking writers and performers including Leonard Cohen and David Bowie, while translations of his songs were recorded by a wide range of performers from the Kingston Trio and Frank Sinatra to Nina Simone, Scott Walker and more recently, Beirut.
Dead Belgian are:
Andy Delamere - Percussion & vocals
Fionnuala Dorrity - Vocals, ukulele & guitar
Simon James - Flute, saxophone, clarinet & mandolin
Matthew Wood - Accordian, piano & vocals
All are well known characters on the Liverpool music scene who have worked with a number of established artists over the years including Super Furry Animals, Kevin Ayers, Shack, The Coral, Gorkys Zygotic Mynci, The Wizards of Twiddly, Emily & The Faves, The John Head Band, and Yellow Kid. Collective theatre credits also include Spike, Big Wow, Walk The Plank, Kaboodle and Rejects Revenge.
"Alternating between French and English, singer Fionnuala Dorrity lives the songs as Brel did - coquettish during 'Madeleine', passionate in 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' and tortured in 'Au Suivant'. The conclusion of 'Amsterdam' had more power than many heavy metal songs." - Word Magazine
The band's debut album 'Love & Death: The Songs of Jacques Brel'' was released on 2/7/2012
PLEASE NOTE: THE BAND WILL BE PERFORMING 3 X 30 MINUTE SETS, STARTING AT 10PM (WITH A BREAK IN BETWEEN EACH SET).
