AGENDA - Gai Barone review 7th May 2011, Dry Live
Overall rating: 5

It was the worst weather the city had seen in weeks as Manchester showed its true colours and the rain fell down hard onto the streets of the Northern Quarter. Those who braved it out regardless of the storms were rewarded, as the relaunch of Agenda displayed a brilliant array of talent and proved that progressive/house trance is one of the most exciting and euphoric genres, and still has a rightful place on the Manchester club scene.
The minimalist, underground cavern that is Dry Live was the setting for Agendas rebirth and it was definitely a great choice for an underground night that values the music and the people more than pretentions and fashions. This isnt a night where people stand pouting in sunglasses to minimal; this is a place where people let themselves go to the music. Its a place, as headliner Gai Barone admired, for family. The blacked out walls allowed the music and the lasers to do the magic, and the club has a feel reminiscent of Area 51 or Sankeys, albeit on a much smaller scale. Its a step up from The Attic, with a larger capacity and a superior set up.
First on stage was Akada from the Manchester Music Family VERSATILE, only doing his second set, he warmed up the crowd with a bang and got everyone in the right mood showing off some good skills.
Next up was NoEscapes Jack Cheetham, whose huge gigs over the past few months have clearly helped him develop into the incredible confident figure that stood behind the decks last night. His technical proficiency and ear for the best tracks shone through as he teased the crowd with his skills, dropping the sound then switching it back up and causing chaos. Last year Jack was focusing mainly on his trance and prog but his set now seems a lot more rounded, and he is without a doubt going to go from strength to strength with each gig he plays. This was just a warm-up set, but Jack could have easily kept the crowd entertained for a whole lot longer.
Gai Barone was next up, and I wasnt quite sure what to expect from a man whose studio work is quite dark and deep, especially when he was to be following Cheethams up-tempo set. There was nothing to fear though, as Barone switched brilliantly between progressive house, techno and stunning euphoric trance, all the while bouncing up and down behind the decks like the happiest man alive. He kept the crowd enthralled from start to sweaty finish (he came off stage dripping, requesting a NoEscape shirt, which he promises hell be wearing during his set tonight in Malta), dropping mixes of Deadmau5s Strobe, Faithless and Tiesto in between slices of deep house and tech.
By the time residents Philthy Chit came on the atmosphere was electric. They joined Gai behind the decks as he finished his set and the ecstasy on all three mens faces was clear to see. It cant be denied Agenda is back and its stronger than ever.
I caught up with Gai and Jack after their sets to see what they had to say.

NoEscape: Gai, good set tonight. How do you feel it went?
Gai Barone: It was great. Massive night, beautiful people. It was a great night. I didnt expect so much to be honest, it was more than I could have imagined. Everyone here is a family, and thats very good.
NoEscape: Yeah, it seems like everyones here for the music. At some clubs its not like that but Agendas got a brilliant atmosphere.
Your studio work seems very chilled out and deep, different to the set you played tonight. How did you go about adapting?
Gai: I had to play some techno, some house, some trance. Youve got to mix it up to suit the crowd. Although I love progressive and deep house I have to be ready to change my style.
NoEscape: How does the English scene compare to the scene back in Italy?
Gai: The English are very upfront, they do what they think and thats beautiful, I love that.
NoEscape: Do you have any plans to play in Ibiza this year?
Gai: I dont know, I have family commitments too so well see.
NoEscape: Which of your tracks do you feel defines your sound?
Gai: Well Lilith was my first major track. Ive got some new tracks that should be out in a couple of weeks too.
NoEscape: Who would you say is your favourite trance DJ at the moment?
Gai: Markus Schulz. Hes one of my favourites right now, and I grew up with his music.
NoEscape: Best end of the night track?
Gai: I like to play something very emotional. Tonight I chose Axwell Heart Is King. Its a great track.
NoEscape: You also played the new Tiesto & Mark Knight track. How do you feel about the change in Tiestos sound?
Gai: I love his music, and on this track I love Dinos voice. Its beautiful.
NoEscape: Any future plans to play in the UK?
Gai: I dont know, Id love to be back!

NoEscape: Jack, your sound has clearly evolved over the past months. How have you been developing it?
Jack Cheetham: Before last summer in Ibiza I was focusing on my prog and trance. Now Im experimenting with techno, deep house and progressive house.
NoEscape: Plans for 2011?
Jack: More work in Ibiza, and more underground events like tonight. Ill still be playing trance of course, but more techy. I got some really good feedback from my set tonight so Ill be taking it deeper and proggier more often now.
NoEscape: How did it feel to play alongside Paul Oakenfold in Glasgow?
Jack: It was incredible. The atmosphere was good for my set but when I entered the main room it was just amazing.
NoEscape: Whos your trance tip of the moment?
Jack: Sam Mitcham and Jordan Suckley.
NoEscape: How did you adapt your set to fit with Gai tonight?
Jack: I expected Gai to be a bit deeper so towards the end of my set I took it deeper, and it worked.
NoEscape: Favourite track of the moment?
Jack: I could say one of my own but thatd be wrong! Ive got to go with the Joris Voorn remix of Robert Babicz Dark Flower.

Expect to see a lot more from Jack Cheetham with NoEscape this year, and as for the UK-loving Gai, Im sure hell be back again very soon.
The next Agenda event will be on June 4th @ Dry Live with Vrije Staat, Richard Alexander, DJ Darz, NoEscape´s Anthony Turner and residents Philthy Chit!

DOC SCOTT + DUB PHIZIX
Overall rating: 3.5

Doc Scott and Dub Phizix absolutely smashed it. Deep dark futuristic beats and some raw drum and bass blasted out of the soundsystem made for a heavy night. Both DJ's layed down huge sets and I'll definately be attending Pandemik night this month. Somnium was last to play on the night who also brought some huge tunes to the table and finished the night in some style.
