The Cordelier Club

Brother and sister duo Richard and Alice Smith, a.k.a The Cordelier Club, are exactly the kind of refreshing, affecting, charming and sophisticated art-rock that British music needs right now. The act write “bittersweet, melancholic stories” and it’s these ballads of modern love which have drawn them comparisons with Jarvis Cocker, Stevie Nicks and Paul Simon.  Yet with diverse contributors such as The Invisible Men and Steve Dub it’s clear why The Cordelier Club’s intense fusion between classic and contemporary has produced a broad fanbase including Radio 1’s tastemaker DJ Rob da Bank, who recently called the group “absolutely great”.

If the BBC’s latest Cordelier Club review (“Today Camden, Tomorrow the World”) is anything to go by – this is likely to be one of your last chances to see the exciting new group in such a small venue!

Spark

Spark is an 18-year-old pop singer who, as The Guardian frankly put it, "is going to be big....Big? Massive."  Equipped with only a synth and guitar this new, young talent has been wowing crowds with her catchy, pop sound since she was barely out of nappies, winning the Xfm busking competition at 15 and spending the last few months touring with Marina and the Diamonds - who's a big fan.  Having worked on recent demos with Annie Lennox's arranger, Spark has created a sound which manages to be both commercial and yet completely unique.  Her debut single, Shut Out the Moon, with it's handclaps, dirty bassline and new wave feel, has drawn comparisons to Kate Bush and La Roux and has left critics across the country wanting more.  Catch her now before she gets - how did the Guardian put it? - "massive."

Boy Mandeville

This north London quartet makes visceral up-beat guitar music that has been road tested on the gig circuit around London and Cambridge for the last year. After originally meeting in Cambridge, the four settled in Haringey, North London to work as a band. With an upcoming single release with London independent label, Kind Canyon Records, the band look to expand their idiosyncratic alt.pop sensibility in 2010. Boy Mandeville represent the antidote to all the misery guts bands of the rock and indie world. They provide sparkling blues, country and folk inspired indie pop nuggets delivered with the precision of a laser guided-missile” – TCS, Cambridge

Playing parties, warehouses, and their own kitchen for friends, the band advocates a DIY attitude towards music believing that live music is a key to developing song ideas and structure. Think Graceland-era Paul Simon, Talking Heads and the Kinks.Boy Mandeville look set to continue gigging and developing their recording craft with a future EP release in the next few months.
