‘Living Space’ is an exhibition that explores the nature of human spaces. Through distorted line drawings, Christina Bryant explores the nature of our relationship to the home environment. Her central piece, Living Space, looks at the ideas related to representation through a drawing. It extends out from the wall ignoring the physical boundaries of the gallery space. She alters our perception of the space and emerges the viewer directly within the drawing making them feel aware of how their own movement and positioning affects the way they see the piece. They are pushed to feel aware of being there, not just as a viewer but as an essential component to the scene’s existence. It is the viewer’s personal memories that allow it to exist as this space, yet is an image that nearly everyone reads with similar knowledge and recognition. We know home to represent safety and warmth but it is clear that the drawing itself is so far away from being warm and comforting. It is the illusion of the image instead, that holds the promise. The whole thing remains a ghostly illusion to which the empty gallery space pushes through.
