Lineup and details for Folklore on Tuesday 14th February 2012
This month we welcome -
Emma Gatrill
Mike Marlin (Solo)
Sarah Johns Music Party
Lucy Kitt
Doors at 7:30 until late
£5 Entry or £4 NUS/ADV
EMMA GATRILL - Solo work consist of intensively beautiful, intricate and delicate harp playing, folk lyrics and a pure enchanting voice an absolute wonder. Gatrill sings for and plays with a long list of amazing folk bands including: Mariner's Children, Sons of Noel and Adrian, Rachael Dadd and Laura Marling.
MIKE MARLIN - Last month, Mike Marlin released his debut single Play That Game, a stunning effort that set the bar high for this album. The notably issue was the songs juxtaposition with a live performance of Hit the Button, something altogether more stomp-worthy but utterly different from the lead track. If only Marlin put a little more time into the order of the songs on the album, it couldve entered another level of excellence. Sadly, youll instead have to put up with it just being great; it gets a 5/5, though its more of a 9/10 or an 18/20. Its all about compromise with the scoring, or at least rounding up. (RED HOT VELVET)
SARAH JOHNS MUSIC PARTY - Before all that though opener Sarah Johns Music Party beguiled with a sweet as sack of fluffy kittens set that included an awesome acapella number Too Many Songs (which reminded me of the equally awesome Camille) GIG JUNKIES
LUCY KITT - is a 20-something artist living in Canterbury, where she is studying a Degree in English where she plays her solo material to crowds both at Canterbury's three universities but also is regarded as a must-see act in Canterbury's live scene. Evoking the sound of the great female american singer-songwriters of the 70's, her music is a beautiful oddity in a world of harsh music. She was also BBC Radio 2 folk musician of the year, which is something.
