Wow, this really is special. Liverpool has got one hell of a clubbing history, roots that stretch back beyond the late eighties rave scene and a genuinely magnificent past that can call upon the great and the good of dance music in well over twenty years of hazy eyed parties and serotonin rushing moments. But it’s a city that still hasn’t quite chalked them all off, the odd elusive artist still remaining out of the scouse clutches. Since Acid House and Quadrant Park exploded in Liverpool there have been very few DJs who have been instrumental figures in the music and not made it to the city, but they do exist. That list has just shrunk.

It seems nigh on unthinkable that Dixon has yet to grace Liverpool with one of his superlative DJ sets, but the Innervisions man hasn’t yet brought his magic to the city’s streets. To call him mercurial tells only a mere snippet of his story, one of a devastating artist who is that rare beast, a DJ capable of transmitting his personality to a dancefloor each and every time he crafts a set. Techno dripping with soul, house music drenched in feeling, grooves enhanced by emotion. This is what Dixon is all about, and this jaw-dropping aural beauty is the standard each time he steps to the decks.

Learning his craft the hard way (he held weekly residencies on Berlin’s early nineties club scene, setting the tone for four or five hours at a time), Dixon is a DJ built not on hype, productions or famous friends, but on talent and hard work. Nearly twenty years in the game has led to an immaculate musical knowledge, a delicate acumen in sussing a dancefloor out and an instinct to harness music’s emotive capacity at the perfect moment. Quite simply, he is the sort of DJ that gets discussed in hushed tones, the ones that make seasoned veterans of the craft like Laurent Garnier and Ritchie Hawtin gasp in wonder, and clubbers worship at his feet. Coco de Mer is the stage where he brings this wizardry to Liverpool for the first time.

But it isn’t just Dixon in for the ride; instead the Berlin wunderkind is bringing his record label Innervisions down to party and in particular one other starlet yet to bring his sound to the city. Marcus Worgull is wildly held as the unsung hero of the Innervisions crew, an expert producer of the atmospheric and deep house music the label is so adept at releasing and an eclectic DJ that know his dance music onions. 

But that would gloss over the fact that many people do give him his propers, clubs such as the Robert Johnson, PanoramaBar, Sub Club, Fabric and Batofor can’t get enough of his epic concoctions of house, techno and broken beats, whilst Gilles Peterson, Carl Cox, Lee Burridge and Ricardo Vilalobos are all fans. He completes the Innervisions template, whilst Coco de Mer residents Mark Mac, Arron Hunter and Jay Burke set the tone from the off.
