UB40 @ Liverpool Echo Arena
Overall rating:
Here we go. First of all I bought a standing ticket for this but it was then changed to all seater without any explanation. I still dont know why or whose bright idea this was and their reasons. I was given a front row seat, which I was excited about until I took my seat and realised the much of the stage and set where obscured by a bank of very loud speakers about 15ft high. The stewards where saying that if people wanted they could get up and dance in the corridors/aisles but the sheer volume of seating just killed any atmosphere at floor level
Secondly, shortly after buying the ticket Ali Campbell left the band. Ali has one of the most distinctive voices, full of soul and emotion. The new lead singer was terrible. He had no soul or emotion in his voice and crucified every song he attempted to sing. He seemed to be almost mimicking Ali at one point and looked abit like that Culshaw impersonator guy off the telly too. It was heartbreaking to say the least and many people were really upset at paying full whack for what was tantermount to a tribute band(not my words, but I totally agreed). It was embarassing really as I felt that the band could sense this and seemed to increasingly push other members of the band forward to sing songs with his minimal involvement to try and win over a enthusiastic but disappointed crowd.
This has got to go down as one of the most disappointing gigs I have ever been to and I left the arena totally flat, saddened at the death of one of the best bands this country has ever produced.
